A cultura e a criatividade são partes integrantes do nosso crescimento enquanto sociedade e são imperativas para o nosso bem-estar pessoal e criativo. Uma cidade ou um país não são apenas definidos por edifícios, atividade económica ou milhões de pessoas a circular, mas sim pela peculiaridade da sua criatividade e da cultura tecida no quotidiano, essencial para o nosso contentamento pessoal e coletivo. A Covid-19 interrompeu as nossas vidas culturais, levou-nos para o subsolo, ao impedir-nos de participar na cultura contemporânea as cidades tornaram-se vazias e desprovidas da energia que lhes dá vida. Com a comunidade luso-canadiana a aproximar-se do 70º aniversário da chegada dos primeiros imigrantes legais ao Canadá, é importante refletir sobre o passado, mas acima de tudo, com uma visão da posteridade, criar uma lista visionária de desejos sobre qual deve ser o futuro da comunidade luso-canadiana.
Os marinheiros portugueses estavam na vanguarda da exploração a nível mundial, incluindo no Canadá. Desde 1953, os portugueses têm vindo a emigrar para o Canadá à procura de oportunidades económicas, movidos pelo desemprego em Portugal e pela fuga à opressão política. O Canadá abraçou os portugueses, tal como tem feito com outras etnicidades, e aproveitou-se para adquirir uma mão de obra disposta a fazer o trabalho que outros evitam. Normalmente, os imigrantes integram o novo país desenvolvendo novas competências, ao mesmo tempo que preservam tradições culturais e costumes que refletem o local onde nasceram.
Apesar de permanecer otimista sobre o futuro, enquanto imigrante, vejo nuvens negras no céu, marcando a obscuridade da jornada que a comunidade lusa poderá adotar para o seu futuro no Canadá. As questões fulcrais para todos os lusófonos são: O que queremos para a nossa comunidade no futuro?; O que é importante para cada um de nós quando analisamos o espaço que ocupamos e será que ainda nos importamos com a nossa cultura portuguesa? Falando enquanto luso-canadiano, partilhar as minhas visões sobre o futuro pode não importar, contudo, se todos decidirmos que o futuro desta comunidade não importa então a riqueza da nossa cultura desaparecerá.
Assim sendo, daqui para a frente, é isto que prevejo:
• Há muito que o Governo português sugere apoio à comunidade, contudo, apenas com palavras e promessas vazias. Não podemos contar com eles para serem os intermediários de quem somos enquanto pessoas no Canadá. Vamos aceitar a sua inação tal como é e seguir em frente criando o nosso processo, pelo qual podemos ser bem-sucedidos. Lembre-se que eles não conseguem organizar uma eleição sequer…
• A nossa cultura é promovida no Canadá através de clubes e associações que representam variadas zonas de Portugal, criando entidades separadas que não fazem nada pela inclusão uns dos outros, especialmente para os mais jovens. Continuamos a reciclar a mesma liderança, e assim perdemos a oportunidade do progresso. Pense no quadro geral em vez de se agarrar ao passado. As novas gerações são o futuro e os dinossauros devem ceder-lhes o lugar.
• Continuamos a falhar na atração de possíveis políticos de qualidade que nos representem neste país. Este tem sido um dos falhanços predominantes na nossa comunidade e, por conseguinte, a falta de desenvolvimento populacional. A falta de poder político significa que não temos influência.
• A não ser que seja um clube bairrista que vende bilhetes que incluem uma refeição e vinho por 20 dólares, os portugueses não se apoiam uns aos outros, nem apoiam projetos importantes. As comunidades desenvolvem-se através do envolvimento cívico e nós ignoramos este aspeto fundamental do desenvolvimento. Aqueles que, no passado, criaram os veículos com os quais vivemos culturalmente hoje, desapareceram e apenas criticam de longe enquanto a geração mais jovem desaparece nos seus telemóveis, sem querer saber da cultura dos seus pais e avós. Sem um envolvimento cívico forte e um lobby eficaz, não conseguiremos ter influência nos assuntos deste país.
• Um exemplo de desenvolvimento comunitário é o projeto Magellan Community Charities, uma casa para acomodar portugueses que não consigam tomar conta de si próprios. Este projeto, que requer a ajuda da comunidade, tem sido afetado pela estagnação mental da comunidade lusófona, particularmente dos empresários, e pela propagação de falsidades proclamadas por muitos que não querem ver o sucesso deste projeto. Este projeto e a forma como a comunidade tem reagido ao mesmo evidenciam todos os pontos que mencionei neste editorial, começando com o Governo português, clubes e associações, a falta de lobby político por parte de alguns e empresários que gastariam 100 dólares num charuto, mas não doam 10 dólares para ajudar os idosos. Este projeto será o farol que pode impulsionar a nossa comunidade para o futuro, então vamos avançar juntos em direção ao destino.
Ao homenagearmos os nossos imigrantes, que chegaram em 1953, vamos refletir sobre os sacrifícios que fizeram para nos abrirem a porta. O nosso destino pode ser produtivo. Será diferente, mas bem-sucedido se tivermos visão para nos elevarmos para o próximo nível. “Sr. Gorbatchev destrua esse muro”, disse Reagan. Isto lembra-me dos opositores da nossa comunidade que têm de destruir os seus muros e aplaudir as expectativas de uma comunidade em transição.

Looking Behind/ Forward
Culture and creativity are an integral part of our growth as a society and imperative for our personal and creative well-being. A city or a country is not solely defined by buildings, economic activity or millions of people walking about, but by the uniqueness of creativity and culture woven throughout everyday life and essential for our personal and collective contentment. Covid-19 interrupted our cultural lives, driving us underground, preventing participation in contemporary culture, cities became unfilled, and devoid of the energy, that makes them alive. As the Portuguese-Canadian community approaches its 70th anniversary of the arrival of the first legal immigrant to Canada, it’s important that we reflect on the past, but more importantly, create a visionary wish-list about what the future of the Lusophone community should be by an envisagement of the future. Portuguese sailors were at the vanguard of world exploration, including Canada. Since 1953, Portuguese have immigrated to Canada for economic opportunity because of underemployment in Portugal and to escape political oppression. Canada has embraced Portuguese as it has many other ethnicities and has taken advantage of acquiring a labour force willing to do the work that others avoided. Immigrants usually integrate into the new country developing new skills, while at the same time preserving cultural traditions and customs reflective of the place they were born.
While remaining optimistic about the future, as an immigrant I see dark clouds in the sky, about the obscurity about the path, which the Luso community may adopt for its future in Canada. Important questions to all Lusophones are “what do we want for our community in the future?” What is important to each of us as we analyze the space we occupy and do we care any longer about our Portuguese culture? Speaking as one Portuguese-Canadian, sharing my views for the future may not matter, however, if we all decide that the future of this community no longer matters then the richness of our culture will disappear. Therefore, looking forward this is what I see:
• The Portuguese government has long suggested support for the community, but only with empty words and promises. We can no longer count on them to be the intermediaries for who we are as people within Canada. Let us accept their inaction for what it is and proceed forward by creating our processes by which we can succeed. Remember they cannot even run an election…
• Our culture is promoted in Canada by clubs and associations representing various areas of Portugal creating separate entities, which do nothing for the inclusion of one another but particularly young people. We continue to recycle the same leadership, thus losing on opportunity for progress. Think of the bigger picture instead of staying in the past. The younger generation are the future and the dinosaurs should step aside.
• We continually fail to attract potential quality politicians to represent us in this country. This has been one of the predominant failures of our community and thus the reason for the lack of populace development. Lack of political power means we don’t have influence.
• Unless you are a “bairrista” club who will sell a ticket for twenty dollars for a meal and wine, Portuguese do not support each other or important projects. Communities develop by civic involvement and we ignore this most important aspect of development. Those who in the past created the vehicles by which we live with culturally, have disappeared and only criticize from afar while the younger generation disappears into their smart phones, not caring about the culture of their parents and grandparents. Without strong civic involvement and effective lobbying, we will fail to become influential in the affairs of this country.
• An example of community development is the Magellan Community Charities project, which is a home to accommodate Portuguese who cannot look after themselves. This project, which requires the help of the community, has been affected by mental stagnation from the Lusophone community and particularly business people plus the propagation of falsehoods by many who do not want success for this enterprise. This project and how the community has reacted to it embodies all things that I mentioned in this editorial starting with the Portuguese government, clubs and associations, lack of political lobbying from some and business people who will spend one hundred dollars on a cigar but won’t give ten dollars to help our seniors. This project will be the beacon that may propel our community to the future so let us step forward into the destiny together.
As we honour our immigrants, who arrived in 1953 let us ponder about the sacrifices they made to open the doors for us. Our destiny can be fruitful. It will be different but successful if we have the vision to take it to the next level. “Mr. Gorbachev tear down that wall” Reagan said. This reminds me of the naysayers in our community who need to tear down their walls and applaud the expectations of a community in transition.
