Morrer lentamente – Esperança e Realidade

Quando falamos das alterações climáticas, as pessoas ou ignoram as notícias desastrosas sobre o clima ou preocupam-se desmedidamente com as potenciais consequências de uma morte lenta para a terra como a conhecemos. Embora possa parecer que esta declaração exagera os factos, tendo em conta a forma como são apresentados atualmente, a verdade é que os dados científicos parecem apoiar esta mensagem de que o globo está em perigo.  Há décadas que as agências climáticas e os ativistas têm vindo a alertar o mundo sobre a destruição cataclísmica dos escudos protetores da terra. Por muito que queiramos culpar o mundo corporativo pelas decisões destrutivas que afetam o nosso mundo, devemos considerar o papel do governo e a nossa responsabilidade pessoal sobre aquilo que praticamos, como sendo os maiores contribuidores para as crescentes condições destrutivas. 

Enquanto vinte mil diplomatas, empresários e ativistas se dirigem a Glasgow para o Cop 26, surgem dúvidas se serão atingidos resultados positivos, tendo em conta cimeiras anteriores onde os acordos assinados tiveram muito pouco significado e não foram implementadas políticas acionáveis. Os principais emissores de carbono e outros gases poluentes são a China, a Rússia, a Índia, o Brasil, entre outros, e estes não farão parte desta cimeira. António Guterres, Secretário-Geral das Nações Unidas, definiu a presente crise como “um código vermelho para a humanidade” e pediu aos países desenvolvidos um compromisso anual de $100 biliões que serão dirigidos para a questão das alterações climáticas. Isto numa altura em que a maioria dos países estão a lutar com défices internos devido à Covid-19 e tentam reconstruir as suas economias. Adivinhe no que é que a maioria dos países vai querer gastar o dinheiro?

A sociedade sabe que o mundo está num caos e em discórdia, mas os líderes desta conferência estão a pintar uma imagem de união mundial, gerando a sensação de que estão todos a cooperar para encontrar uma solução. Os ativistas sugerem que em toda a história da humanidade, nunca existiu uma elite política realmente preocupada com o bem-estar do cidadão comum. Se é esse o caso, como pode haver esperança de que as nações cooperem para resolver os graves problemas que enfrentamos. Desde que a Covid começou, a população de ratos em Glasgow aumentou 25%.  Talvez a melhor forma de resolver esta crise mundial seja permitir que os roedores escrevam a declaração final, talvez assim os contratos sejam cumpridos.

À medida que os gases de efeito de estufa associados ao aquecimento global continuam, a maioria de nós passeia nas ruas do nosso mundo sem prestar atenção à realidade. A atitude é de que estes problemas não são nossos para serem resolvidos individualmente, mas sim por cientistas, diplomatas e ativistas. No entanto, assim que aceitamos as verdades fundamentais, percebemos que o melhor mecanismo de resolução está a um nível individual. Vivemos num mundo político onde a verdade é uma consequência das mentiras. Cada ativista, cada político e cada um de nós manipula a verdade para que caiba numa vida conveniente. Choramos por aqueles que sofrem e morrem nos desastres que avassalam o mundo, mas as lágrimas param de correr assim que terminamos de ver as notícias ou de ler o jornal. Vá, continue a poluir. Os nossos filhos e netos vão agradecer-lhe mais tarde.

Dying Slowly – Hope & Reality

When speaking of climate change, people either ignore the calamitous news about climate or completely stress out about the potential consequences of a slow death for earth as we know it. While this statement may appear to be overstating the facts as they are currently presented, scientific data appears to back the messaging that the globe is in trouble. The climate intelligencia and activists have been warning the world about the cataclysmic destruction of earth’s protective shields for decades. As much as we want to blame the corporate world for the destructive decisions affecting our world, we must consider the role of governments and personal responsibility for what we practice as major contributors for the burgeoning destructive conditions.

As twenty thousand diplomats, business executives and activists descend on Glasgow for Cop 26, doubts are abound that positive results will be achieved if we review previous summits where signed agreements have meant very little and actionable policies have not been implemented. The largest emitters of carbon and other pollution are China, Russia, India, Brazil, to name a few and they will not co-operate with this summit. Antonio Guterres who is the Secretary General of the United Nations has defined the current crisis as a “code red for humanity” and has asked for $ 100 billion a year commitments from developed countries to address climate change at a time when most countries are grappling with internal deficits due to Covid-19 and attempting to reconstruct their economies. Guess what most countries will choose to spend their money on?

Society knows that the world is in conflict and chaos, but the leaders of the conference are painting a picture of a worldly togetherness with a sense that they are all in it co-operating to achieve a solution. Activists are suggesting that in the entire history of mankind, there has never been a political elite sincerely concerned about the well-being of regular people. If this is the case, what hope is there that nations will co-operate to resolve the serious issues at hand. The rat population in Glasgow has increased by 25% since Covid began. Perhaps the best way to resolve world crisis is to allow the rodents to write the final declaration, which may result in the contracts being honoured this time.

As the atmosphere’s greenhouse gases and the associated warming of climate continues most of us walk the streets of our world not paying attention to reality. Attitudes are that these problems are not ours to resolve individually but by scientists, diplomats and activists, however the best mechanism of resolution is at an individual level once we come to terms with fundamental truths. We live in a political world where truth is a consequence of lies. Every activist, politician and us bend the reality to make things fit in a convenient life. We cry for those who suffer and die due to the disasters affecting the world, but the tears stop flowing as soon as we finish watching the news or reading the newspaper. Go ahead and continue polluting. Our children and grandchildren will thank us later.
