Assistir a rostos de pedra, apresentados na TV, a tentarem compreender as palavras que fluem de lábios estáticos… sem ouvir nada porque já não importa o que sai do ecrã. Este é o estado da vida onde a informação é difundida para confundir ao invés de ser para educar e informar. Enquanto esperamos pelo futuro e tentamos entender o passado, o tempo ocupa cada vez menos espaço nas nossas vidas enquanto os políticos tentam encontrar novas palavras para descrever o nosso estado de confinamento ou liberdade. Dizer não à solidão significa que conseguimos encontrar meios para sobreviver aos desafios atuais. Mantenha-se positivo.
Esta semana, o Milénio Stadium aborda os problemas das diferenças culturais lusófonas, da sua continuação e resistência a um mundo em mudança. Os cidadãos portugueses estão espalhados por todo o mundo, procurando adaptar-se a novas terras, costumes e tradições, ao mesmo tempo que mantêm o fogo cultural com o qual nasceram, lutando para o manter vivo mesmo que rodeados por novas sociedades. Aqueles que se identificam como portugueses… independentemente do país onde vivem atualmente, muitas vezes questionam-se: Será que o esforço vale o sacrifício para regressar às minhas raízes e será que os portugueses que nunca imigraram querem saber? É obvio que são muitos os que se importam em manter a chama Luso viva e como resultado, passam o seu tempo a tentar equilibrar as suas vidas para que não a percam. Um imigrante em França ou na Alemanha é o mesmo que um imigrante no Canadá? Eu diria que não. Cada um pratica a sua cultura de formas diferentes com base nas práticas e integração na cultura de cada país, acabando por adotar maneirismos únicos desse país.
Os imigrantes luso-canadianos têm muito trabalho por fazer para que consigam atingir o nível intelectual exigido para ser bem-sucedido na sociedade canadiana de hoje. Embora possamos ser trabalhadores árduos e até admirados por outras etnicidades pela nossa destreza na participação laboral, tornámo-nos numa sociedade preguiçosa. Os aspetos relacionados com educação e integração devem ser observados por aqueles que orquestram a mudança. Esta semana, numa entrevista para a Camões TV, o novo cônsul de Toronto José Manuel Carneiro Mendes mostrou o seu desejo de se tornar parte do elemento catalisador que assegurará a continuidade da prosperidade da cultura portuguesa no Canadá e que permeia em todos os níveis da sociedade canadiana. O desafio será colocar um arreio nas organizações culturais moribundas que existem hoje que são na sua maioria apáticas e falta-lhes a liderança necessária para abranger todos os demográficos. Precisamos de novas organizações com visão para nos levarem ao próximo nível. Substituam as organizações veneráveis que talvez tenham servido bem a comunidade no passado, mas que já não são um método efetivo de educar a próxima geração que está sedenta por liderança. Atualmente a abordagem egoísta e indiferente que está imposta, não terá os resultados positivos que desejamos.
Contudo, a questão permanece: “Queremos mesmo saber?”. O nosso novo cônsul quer e a nível pessoal, irei apoiá-lo para atingir o sucesso que já conseguiu conquistar noutras localizações. Talvez finalmente tenhamos alguém em quem podemos depositar alguma esperança.
O distanciamento físico não deve servir de armário às nossas mentes culturais. Mantenha-se seguro/a!

Watching stone faces on TV set trying to understand words flowing out of static lips… not hearing anything because it no longer matters what is coming out of the screen. This is the state of life where information is meant to confuse and not to educate and inform. While waiting for the future and trying to understand the past, time occupies less and less space in our lives while politicians attempt to find new words to describe our state of confinement or freedom. Saying no to solitude means that we can find a means to survive the current challenges. Stay positive.
This week’s Milénio Stadium addresses the issues of Lusophone cultural differences and their continuance and endurance in a changing world. Portuguese citizens are scattered throughout the world searching to adapt to new lands, customs and traditions while embodying a cultural fire they were born with while fighting to keep it alive surrounded by brand new societies. Those who identify themselves as Portuguese… regardless of the country currently living in, often ask the question: Is the effort worth the sacrifice to return to my roots and do Portuguese who never immigrated really care? It’s obvious that many do care to keep the Luso fire burning and as a result spent their time balancing lives so not to lose it. Is an immigrant to France or Germany the same as an immigrant to Canada? I would suggest not. Each practices culture in different ways based on the practices and integration into each country’s culture and adopts mannerisms unique to that country.
Portuguese-Canadian immigrants have a lot of work to do in order to reach the intellectual levels for success in today’s Canadian society. While we may be hard working people praised by other ethnicities for our prowess in labour participation, we became lazy in societal, education and integration aspects required to be noted by those who orchestrate change. In an interview with Camões TV this week, the new Consul to Toronto José Manuel Carneiro Mendes indicated a desire to become part of the catalyst which will ensure that Portuguese culture continues to flourish in Canada and permeates into all levels of Canadian society. The challenge will be to harness existing moribund cultural organizations which are for the most part apathetic and lacking the leadership which is required to encircle all demographics.
New organizations with vision are required to take us to the next level. Replace the venerable institutions that may have served the community well in the past but are no longer the effective method to educate the generation that is currently hungry for leadership. The lackadaisical and egotistical approach currently in place will not have the positive outcomes we all desire.
But the question remains “Do we really care?”. Our new council does and on a personal level, I will support him to the success he has achieved in other locations. Perhaps finally we have someone we can hang some hope on.
Physical distancing should not be a closet for our cultural minds. Stay Safe!
