Durante muitos anos, o consenso dos especialistas do mundo foi que o Canadá deveria servir de exemplo para o resto da sociedade, uma vez que possui a melhor fórmula para acolher todos os que querem fazer deste país a sua casa. Sempre foi considerado um farol de democracia e um exemplo de governação baseada na igualdade para todos. Atualmente, na minha opinião, o Canadá não é nada disso e os seus “mestres políticos” já não são de confiança e a pergunta que se impõe é: como chegámos aqui?
Não existe uma estrada ou um processo definido que tenha criado um caminho para o colapso social das instituições e dos governos que supostamente cuidam dos nossos interesses. A decadência e as carências são visíveis por todo o lado, sobretudo nos meios urbanos que estão a ser ocupados por seres humanos deslocados e por seres da classe média que já não se podem dar ao luxo de o ser. O facto de se apontar o dedo e de se moverem responsabilidades obscuras faz com que nada seja feito. A nossa economia prospera com os maus sentimentos e, como resultado, desde 2020, o 1% mais rico captou quase dois terços de toda a nova riqueza global, quase o dobro do dinheiro que o resto da população mundial. Podemos olhar para este facto e considerá-lo chocante, mas como e porque é que esta riqueza é criada de forma tão desproporcionada?
A desigualdade sempre existiu e nunca vai mudar, porque os seres humanos não são iguais e cada um possui um conjunto diferente de valores que os orientam. Podemos olhar para as estatísticas até as vacas voltarem para casa, mas o que não podemos mudar são as inseguranças que a maioria adquire por não ter ou ter um cobrador a telefonar, a adrenalina do pagamento da renda ou da hipoteca ou o simples pensamento de saber que não se vai poder reformar como planeado. Recentemente, as discussões têm sido sobre as formas corruptas utilizadas pelo Governo do Ontário para lidar com o Greenbelt na província e as alterações que foram feitas sob o pretexto de construir a tão necessária habitação. É certo que, nesta altura, a maior parte das acusações são especulativas e temos de esperar que a investigação esteja concluída para termos uma ideia mais clara. Para mim, o Greenbeltgate tem mais a ver com a confiança nos processos administrativos dos nossos recursos, com a imigração e com o facto de termos o governo certo a tomar decisões em nosso nome. O Governo Ford foi eleito com uma maioria para governar e decidiu que precisava de libertar terrenos para acolher novas habitações, a fim de resolver as insuficiências de um governo federal no que respeita à imigração. Esta declaração não tem a ver com o tipo de imigração necessário, mas sim com o facto de se ter de fornecer quatro paredes para confortar aqueles que vêm para este país.
Após anos a chutar a bola para a frente, todos os níveis de governo se apercebem subitamente de que está a ocorrer uma rebelião social devido à sua ignorância. Não é de admirar que apenas 9% dos canadianos confiem nos governos e que os meios de comunicação social, em quem se confia da mesma forma, tenham sido completamente irresponsáveis na responsabilização dos governos. E os partidos da oposição, que não têm a confiança dos canadianos, continuam a ser porta-vozes de sistemas e soluções que nunca irão satisfazer as nossas necessidades atuais. Sim, a metodologia do Governo Ford cheira mal, por mais batom que lhe ponham em cima, mas pelo menos tomaram uma decisão. A dor e a retórica serão cobertas com uma ligadura até vermos de facto uma casa construída, porque a burocracia do governo garantirá que levará anos a iniciar a construção de qualquer habitação significativa. Entretanto, vamos construir metropolitanos e autoestradas para pessoas que não podem pagar o básico da vida.
Toronto e a GTA acolherão 200 mil pessoas por ano. O alojamento será de baixa qualidade e não respeitará os direitos humanos básicos. O que é necessário é ficar preso a fotografias políticas e a falsas promessas para acomodar pessoas já inseguras. Os que têm e os que não têm estarão sempre aqui, mas é nossa responsabilidade social e política garantir que a universalidade do sofrimento não se espalhe por todo o lado.
Quanto a Ford, o relatório do auditor sugere que são os promotores imobiliários que ditam as suas políticas. Os promotores imobiliários são investidores e assumem riscos para ganhar dinheiro, por isso, porque não hão-de influenciar a política do governo e ditar o que é necessário para resolver os problemas da habitação?

The consensus for many years from worldly pundits was that Canada should serve as an example to the rest of society as having the best formula to accommodate all that want to make this country a home. It has always been considered a beacon of democracy and an example of governance based on equality for all.
Today as I see it, Canada is none of the above and its political masters’ are no longer trusted and the question that must be asked is how did we got here from there? There is no defined road or process that has created a path to the social breakdown of institutions and governments which purportedly look after our interests. Decay and needs are visible everywhere, particularly in urban settings being taken over by displaced human beings and by middle class beings who can no longer afford to be. Finger pointing and moving shadowy responsibility ensures that nothing ever gets done.
Our economy thrives on bad feelings and as a result since 2020, the richest one percent has captured nearly two-thirds of all new wealth globally, almost twice as much money as the rest of the world’s population. We may look at this and find it appalling, but how and why is this wealth created in such disproportionate ways? Inequality has always existed, and it will never change because human beings are not equal and each possess a different set of values that guide them. We can look at statistics until the cows come home but what we can’t change are insecurities that most acquire from not having or having a bill collector call, the adrenaline of due rent or mortgage payment or the simple thought of knowing you won’t be able to retire as planned. The discussions recently have been about the corruptive ways employed by the Ontario Government in dealing with the Greenbelt in Ontario and the changes which were made under the guise of building much needed housing.
Admittedly at this point most of the accusations are speculative and we have to wait until the investigation is complete to have a clearer picture. For me, the Greenbeltgate is more about trust in the administrative processes of our resources, immigration and having the right government to make decisions on our behalf. The Ford government was elected with a majority to govern and has decided that it needed to free land to accommodate new housing to resolve the inadequacies of a federal government with respect to immigration. This statement is not about the type of immigration needed but about providing four walls to comfort those who come to this country. After years of kicking the ball forward, every level of government suddenly realizes that a social rebellion is happening because of their ignorance. It is no wonder that only 9% of Canadians trust governments and media who are trusted in a similar manner have been completely irresponsible in holding governments accountable.
And opposition parties who do not have the trust of Canadians continue to be mouthpieces for systems and solutions who will never satisfy our current needs. Yes, the Ford government’s methodology stinks no matter how much lipstick they put on it, but at least they made a decision. Pain and rhetoric will be covered with a bandage until we actually see a home built because government’s bureaucracy will ensure that it will take years to start construction of any meaningful housing. In the meantime, let’s build subways and highways for people who can’t afford the basics of life. Toronto and the GTA will accommodate 200 thousand people each year. The accommodation will be sub-standard and non-compliant to basic human rights. What is needed is stuck in political photo-ops and false promises to accommodate people already insecure. The haves and have-nots will always be here but it’s our social and political responsibility to ensure that the universality of suffering doesn’t spread everywhere. As for Ford, the auditor’s report suggests developers dictate its policies. Developers are investors and risk takers in it to make money, so why shouldn’t they influence government’s policy and dictate what is needed to resolve the housing issues?
