This week’s article will introduce the reader to one of the world’s largest petroleum exploration and production companies, Royal Dutch Shell PLC, most commonly known as “Shell”. The company itself is of British and Dutch origins. Shell is a true multinational corporation with retail outlets in all corners of the earth. It is the second largest private sector energy entity and is one of the six “superplayers”. Shell is vertically integrated, and self sufficient in the private sector of oil exploration, natural gas, propane and petroleum product(s) marketing and retailing companies. The company is headquartered in the Hague, Netherlands and its main registered office is in London, England, specifically Shell Centre. In 2007, Shell was ranked the eighth largest company in the world by Forbes, and ranked the third largest corporation in the world, only after Wal-Mart and Exxonmobil. (Two American titans) Shell operates in over 75 percent of the world’s countries, 140 to be exact. Its US operation, Shell Oil Company, headquartered in Houston Texas, is Shell’s largest businesses.
Shell is and continues to be vertically integrated in each and every area of the oil and gas industry, including but not limited to, exploration, refining, production, transportation, distribution, marketing, retailing, power generation and petrochemicals. The company produces approximately 3.7 million barrels of oil per day and operates over 44,000 service stations worldwide.
Shell was originally formed in 1907, as a result of the merger of “Shell” Transport and Training Company from the United Kingdom and Royal Dutch Petroleum Company, based in the Netherlands. The new company grew rapidly and became the largest competitor to JD Rockefeller’s, American giant Standard Oil. Shell grew so rapidly, that by 1920, they were the largest producer of oil in the world. By 1929, Shell began to enter the chemicals industry and has continued to lead the pack since then.
The Shell logo or insignia is one of the world’s most familiar and recognizable symbols. The logo symbolizes a large sea shell, (pecten) aptly named after the giant scallop shell, (pecten maximus).
Some historians believe that the yellow and red colours are directly related to the colours in the Spanish national flag. The most recent revision to the logo was designed by artist Raymond Loewy in 1972. The actual name of “Shell” is thought to be directly linked to the “Shell” Transport and Trading Company. In 1833, the founder’s father, Marcus Samuel Senior, set up an importing venture to acquire and import sea shells to London elites.
Shell has a long history of community sponsorships and event sponsorships, most famous being Scuderia Ferrari, McLaren, Lotus, Ducati Corse and BMW Motorsport.

- 1930’s – Figural Shell double sided milk glass gas pump globe in pristine condition. Approximately 16” in width with original Shell embossment. No cracks or breaks. C-9 condition.
- 1950’s – Australian market one pint filling pitcher, never used, N.O.S. condition with original label. No wear to paint or graphics, C-10 condition.
- 1950’s – Three lot, two – Shell lustur-seal cleaner and sealer wax bottles, partial contents. 1950’s – Shell X-100 piggy bank can. Great graphics with minor surface oxidization. C-8 condition.
- 1950’s – Shell oil X-100, gas pump spinner, N.O.S. condition with no wear. Wind powered, rotates as “Buy” flips continuously during rotation. Very hard to find. C-10 condition.

- 1950’s – Óleo de concha X-100, girador de bombas de gás, condição N.O.S. sem desgaste. Movido a vento, gira à medida que “Comprar” gira continuamente durante a rotação. É muito difícil de encontrar. Condição C-10.
