A 15 de setembro, o Toronto Police Board anunciou que Myron Demkiw, um veterano que conta com mais de 32 anos na força policial, será o próximo Chefe da Polícia. Depois de Mark Saunders resignar do cargo em 2020, James Ramer assumiu a posição temporariamente. Ramer já mostrou o seu apoio ao novo nomeado e permanecerá no cargo durante os próximos três meses até terminar o período de adaptação de Demkiw.

Myron Demkiw completou os seus estudos na Universidade de Toronto, na Faculdade de Direito com o programa Global Professional Master of Laws, além de se ter licenciado em Criminologia e Ciência Política. Já na Rotman School of Management concluiu o programa de Liderança policial. Atualmente, desempenha a função de Acting Deputy Chief of Specialized Operations Command, o que se traduz na gestão de 1,200 polícias, mais de 900 membros civis e a administração de um orçamento de 240 milhões de dólares.

À sua extensa carreira soma-se a função de Staff Superintendent, tendo sido responsável por dois pilares distintos da organização. Recentemente, liderava a Gestão de Riscos Corporativos que inclui os Padrões Profissionais, o Apoio a Padrões Profissionais e o Toronto Police College; anteriormente, supervisionou os Serviços de Detetives que incluem unidades de investigação de alto nível, como a unidade de homicídios, a task force relacionada com armas e gangs e o esquadrão de assalto.

Durante o seu percurso de proteção à comunidade que serve, Demkiw desempenhou o cargo de Comandante da Unidade de Serviços de Inteligência e Oficial encarregado de projetos corporativos de Gestão Estratégica, foi o Second in Comand da Divisão 32, Duty Senior Officer e cumpriu uma série de funções de supervisão em várias unidades. Liderou ainda a implementação de recomendações, incluindo o programa de Policiamento Justo e Imparcial, o programa de Desenvolvimento Intercultural e fez parte do Comité Consultivo PACER.

Além disso, é um membro da Associação Canadiana de Chefes de Polícia, faz parte do Comité de Emendas da Lei e é copresidente do Comité Contra o Terrorismo e Segurança Nacional. É também membro dos Grupos de Trabalho Nacionais do CACP de Apoio às Vítimas de Terrorismo e Violência em Massa e Combate à Violência Extrema.

A seleção de Chefe da Polícia foi um processo de duas partes, minucioso e que incluiu a consulta pública que guiou o Conselho na identificação das competências e habilidades necessárias. Pela primeira vez, foi incluído um corpo civil no comité de consulta, composto por indivíduos que não eram membros ou parte do staff.

No dia 19 de dezembro de 2022 quando assumir oficialmente o seu cargo como Chefe da Polícia, o membro da Ordem do Mérito das Forças Policiais anunciará à população quais serão as suas prioridades para o seu mandato de três anos. Num período conturbado no que diz respeito ao sentimento de segurança da população de Toronto, o Chefe da Polícia terá um grande desafio pela frente, focado no dever de servir e proteger.

TO SERVE AND PROTECT

On September 15, the Toronto Police Board announced that Myron Demkiw, a veteran that has been in the police force for more than 32 years, will be the next Chief of Police. After Mark Saunders resigned from the position in 2020, James Ramer took over temporarily. Ramer has already shown his support to the new nominee and will remain in office for the next three months until Demkiw’s adaptation period ends.

Myron Demkiw completed his studies in the University of Toronto, in the Faculty of Law with the Global Professional Master of Laws program, as well as a degree in Criminology and Political Science. At the Rotman School of Management Demkiw completed the Police Leadership program.

During his extensive career assumed the role of Staff Superintendent, having been responsible for two distinct pillars of the organization. Most recently, he oversaw Corporate Risk management, which includes Professional Standards, Professional Standards Support and Toronto Police College; prior to this, Demkiw oversaw Detective Services, which includes Service’s high profile investigative units, such as the Homicide Squad, Integrated Guns and Gangs Task Force, and the Hold-Up Squad.

During his journey to protect the community he serves, Demkiw served as the Unit Commander of Intelligence Services and the Officer in Charge of Strategy Management Corporate Projects, Duty Senior Officer, the Second in Command of 32 Division and has fulfilled several supervisory roles in various units throughout the organization. He has also led the implementation of recommendations, including the Service’s Fair and Impartial Policing program, the Service’s Intercultural Development Program and was part of the PACER Advisory Committee.

Furthermore, Myron Demkiw is a member of the Canadian police Chiefs Association, serves on the Law Amendment Committee, and is co-chair of the Counterterrorism and Homeland Security Committee. He is also a member of the CACP National Working Groups to Support Victims of Terrorism and Mass Violence and Combat Extreme Violence.

The selection for Chief of Police was a thorough, two -part process that included public consultation that guided the Council in identifying the required competencies and skills. For the first time, a civilian body was included in the consultation committee, composed of individuals who were not members or part of the staff.

On December 19, 2022, when he will officially assume the position of Chief of Police, the member of the Order of Merit of the Police Forces will announce to the population what his priorities will be for his three-year term. In a troubled period regarding the feeling of security of the population of Toronto, the Chief of Police will have a great challenge ahead, focused on the duty to serve and protect.
