Os Luso-canadianos e a educação
A 23 de março de 2019, a Federação de Empresários e Profissionais Luso-Canadianos celebrou a sua 37.ª Annual Scholarship and Excellence Award. Foram distribuídas 37 bolsas de estudo a alunos, desde o ensino secundário ao ensino superior. Foram ainda cedidos dois prémios especiais, um dos quais eu tive o privilégio de entregar a Matthew Carias, que está a estudar em Otava para ser médico/investigador.
A entrega de bolsas de estudo tornou-se uma prática comum na comunidade luso-canadiana, com o apoio da Federação, ACAPO, Local 183 e vários outros clubes e associações. Ao vermos as centenas de prémios financeiros a serem entregues, devemos questionar se está a ter o impacto necessário para que a comunidade luso-canadiana prossiga para o ensino superior depois de terminar o ensino secundário. Está alguém a acompanhar a forma como os fundos são usados e se estão a ser utilizados com o propósito para o qual foram entregues? Existe uma responsabilização pela forma como os fundos são investidos ou os estudantes podem gastar como lhes apetecer? Eu suspeito que nem todos os estudantes utilizem os fundos para prosseguir os seus estudos ou para pagar as propinas. A responsabilização e necessidade devem ser primordiais para a entrega de bolsas de estudo, tanto para os estudantes como para quem disponibiliza os fundos.
Conhecer o Matthew Carias e ter a oportunidade de conversar sobre os seus sonhos para o futuro, deu-me uma ideia do que é possível quando os pais se preocupam e encorajam os filhos a prosseguir para o ensino superior. No mundo de hoje, em constante movimento, isto é essencial para a sobrevivência. A sua visão e entusiasmo acerca do futuro e daquilo que quer conquistar, demonstra integridade no respeito que tem pela ajuda dos seus pais e, na Gala, expressou uma profunda gratidão por ter sido considerado para o prémio. Que a nova geração siga o seu exemplo e tenha respeito suficiente pela sociedade para seguir um caminho onde a educação forma a base para o futuro.
Os prémios profissionais e de negócio foram entregues a indivíduos merecedores, que têm dado uma contribuição importante e substancial para a nossa comunidade. José Melo, George Pimentel, Larry Vieira e o Abrigo Centre estão de parabéns por mostrarem o espírito luso-canadiano.
A Gala em si foi, possivelmente, o melhor evento dos últimos anos na comunidade. Foi realizada dentro do tempo adequado e com o profissionalismo que o evento merecia. Um bom exemplo para os 37 beneficiários dessa noite.

Education and Portuguese Canadians
On March 23rd, 2019, the Federation of Portuguese Canadian Business and Professionals held its 37th Annual Scholarship and Excellence Award ceremony. Thirty-seven scholarships were handed out to students studying from high school level to university graduates. Two special awards were given, one of which I had the privilege to present to Matthew Carias, who is studying in Ottawa to become a doctor/researcher.
The awarding of scholarships has become a common occurrence in the Portuguese Canadian community including the Federation, ACAPO, Local 183 and various clubs and associations. In viewing the hundreds of these financial gifts being awarded, we should question if it’s having an impact on the enhancement of Portuguese Canadians progressing to higher learning levels after high school. Is anyone following up on how the funds are used and if they are used for the purpose given? Is there accountability for the expenditure of the funds or can the students use the money as they please? I suspect that not all students use the funds to further their studies or pay for tuition fees. Accountability and need should be paramount in awarding the scholarships from both the students and those who provide the funds.
Meeting Matthew Carias and speaking to him about his dreams for the future, provided a snapshot of what is possible when parents care and encourage their children in the pursuit of higher education. It is essential for survival in today’s fast-moving world. His enthusiasm and vision about the future and what he needs to accomplish, showed integrity about the respect he has for his parents help and at the Gala, he expressed deep gratitude for being considered for the award. Let the younger generation follow this example and have enough respect for society to follow a path where education forms the base of their future.
The business and professional awards were given to deserving individuals who have made a substantial contribution to our community. Mr. José Melo, George Pimentel, Larry Vieira and Abrigo Centre are to be congratulated for showing what Portuguese Canadian spirit is about.
The Gala itself was possibly the best event in the community in the past few years. It proceeded on a timely basis and it was carried out with the professionalism that the event deserves. A good example for the 37 recipients that evening.
