O essencial para ser humano
Os seres humanos devem adotar um processo de pensamento segundo o qual os vulneráveis e os necessitados devem ser ajudados. Em muitas culturas, os idosos eram venerados e as famílias adotavam políticas segundo as quais os idosos deviam ser cuidados até à morte, dentro dos limites da casa da família.
A nossa educação, independentemente do estatuto social, consistia em prestar ajuda física, psicológica e espiritual aos idosos até à morte com os melhores métodos de cuidados possíveis. À medida que a Magellan Community Charities constrói o seu primeiro Centro de Cuidados de Longa Duração, a sociedade compreende que os tempos mudaram e que as normas sociais e financeiras ditaram uma transformação dos critérios sobre a forma como cuidamos da nossa população idosa. As prioridades ditam que se lide com as pressões sociais porque os filhos e as filhas são, na sua maioria, incapazes de cuidar daqueles que nos deram a vida. A verdade é que a maior parte dos idosos está alojada em condições precárias e muitos morrem de solidão e dor. Como seres humanos, passamos 90 por cento da nossa vida diária a tratar dos nossos assuntos, mal pensando na realidade inevitável do envelhecimento e da necessidade de cuidados. Quando a realidade desperta a nossa alma para o facto de que um dia, em breve, também nós iremos necessitar de cuidados, um milhão de questões e possibilidades invadem o nosso ser sobre como é que essa responsabilidade vai acontecer depois de uma vida de luta contra as rotinas da vida e de acumulação dos tostões necessários para pagar um futuro funeral. A questão é: “e daqui até lá?”.
A maioria das pessoas preferiria permanecer em casa, mas as condições económicas nem sempre o permitem. À medida que a população global continua a envelhecer, as questões relacionadas com a habitação para idosos em cuidados prolongados continuam a predominar, mas as ações para estabilizar estes cuidados especializados mais necessários são lentas e burocráticas.
Que tal soluções alternativas à normalidade do armazenamento? Talvez o regresso aos cuidados domiciliários totalmente financiados pelo governo, tal como acontece com as torres de grande altura que estão a ser construídas, seja uma opção. Seriam necessários menos edifícios e ambientes semelhantes aos dos hospitais, substituídos pelo amor e pela compaixão dos membros da família, que fariam parte de um sistema de enfermeiros, médicos e ajuda financeira que corresponderia à forma ineficaz como hoje se vive no seio de comunidades de estranhos.
Não é um conceito original, mas é um conceito que traria de volta a humanidade a um sistema. Isto não quer dizer que não sejam necessários centros de cuidados prolongados como o Magellan, mas uma combinação de ambos traria um alívio muito necessário ao nosso sistema de saúde.
A prioridade ao bem-estar, ao conforto e à vida digna dos nossos cidadãos idosos deve ser uma prioridade para todos nós. O Magellan está a ser construído para proporcionar isto e muito mais, mas para que esta e outras instalações sejam bem-sucedidas, será necessária a total adesão das comunidades, ajudando-as financeira e voluntariamente. Não é suficiente que os cidadãos coloquem os seus idosos numa instituição e esperem que outros cuidem deles na totalidade. Eles continuam a precisar do amor da família e não vai ser um estranho que vai satisfazer essas necessidades. O Magellan vai satisfazer as necessidades culturais, gastronómicas e sociais, mas é preciso mais para criar um círculo de vida digno para aqueles que não têm outra opção senão confiar os seus entes queridos a outros. Tornar-se um espectador na prestação de cuidados é uma abdicação das responsabilidades da sociedade.
Que o Magellan seja um farol de transformação dos cuidados implementados com o cuidado de permitir que aqueles que não podem possam, possam.
Pensamento final: A minha mãe escolheu ficar sozinha em casa. À medida que os anos passam e os seus dias se enchem de preocupações com a família distante, e o abraço da solidão de um abraço perdido, pergunto-me se é assim que deve ser. Respeito a sua escolha e convicção, mas tenho de me questionar sobre os meus próprios cuidados um dia. Será que vou ter de viver a olhar por uma pequena janela para a vida que passa sem rima, nem razão?

The Essentials for Being Human
Human beings should embrace a thought process whereby those vulnerable and in need are to be helped. In many cultures, the aged were revered and families adopted policies that the elderly were to be taken care of until death within the confines of the family home.
Our upbringing, regardless of social status, was to provide physical, psychological and spiritual help to the aged until death with the best possible methods of care. As Magellan Community Charities builds their first Long Term Care Facility, society understands that times have changed, and social and financial norms have dictated a transformation of criteria on how we take care of our aged population. Priorities dictate dealing with societal pressures because sons and daughters are, for the most part, unable to take care of those who gave us life. The ugly truth is that most seniors are warehoused in poor conditions and many die of loneliness and pain. As humans we spend ninety percent of our waking life going about our business, hardly thinking about the inescapable reality of aging and requiring care. When reality awakens your soul that one day soon you too will require care, a million questions and possibilities invade your being about how this responsibility is going to happen after a life of fighting routines of life and accumulating the pennies we need to pay for a future funeral.
The question is “what about from now till then?” Most of course would choose to remain in their home but economic conditions don’t always allow it. As the global population continues to age, the issues surrounding housing for seniors in long-term care continue to predominate but actions to stabilize this most needed specialized care is slow and bureaucratic. How about alternative solutions from the normalcy of warehousing? Perhaps the return to home care fully financed by the government the same way they do for the high rise towers being built would be an option. Less buildings and hospital-like settings would be required and replaced with love and compassion of family members being part of a system of nurses, doctors and financial help that would match today’s inefficient living within communities of strangers. Not an original concept but one that would bring back humanity into a system. This is not to suggest that long term care facilities such as Magellan would not be needed, but a combination of both would bring much needed relief to our health care system. The prioritization of well-being, comfort and dignified living of our aged citizens should be a priority for all of us.
Magellan is being built to provide this and more, but for this facility and others to be successful, it will need the full embracement of communities in helping financially and voluntarily. It’s just not good enough for citizens to place their elders in a facility and expect others to fully take care of them. They continue to need love of family and it won’t be a stranger that’s going to fulfill those needs. Magellan will execute cultural, gastronomic and social needs, but more is needed to create a circle of life dignified by those who have no choice but to entrust their loved ones to others. Becoming a spectator in providing care is an abdication of societal responsibilities. Let Magellan be a beacon of transformation for care implemented with the care to allow those who can’t to can.
Final thought: My mother chose to be home alone. As the years pass and her days filled with the worrying of family far away, and the embracement of loneliness from a missing hug, I wonder if it’s the way to be. I respect her choice and conviction, but I have to wonder about my own care one day. Will it be to live looking out a small window at life passing by with little rhyme or reason?
