What is your life worth?

As 2024 begins, it’s hard not to be consumed with a feeling of apprehension given the state of the world. Everyday provides statistics detailing human deaths as a result of various calamities which can affect the world. In a given day about 150,000 people die as a result of various factors, including natural disasters, accidents, illnesses and violence. We have come to accept the concepts of death which occur naturally, except the notion of violence which includes wars. Brutality of human to human leading to bloodshed and death has been a normality since the beginning of human conception so why should we bother placing a value on human life when so many don’t? Many will tell you that death is a natural method of world renewal such as Influenza which kills 400,000 people a year. In Canada there are 845 deaths per day and Portugal 311, and these are countries not involved in war conflicts.

The value of human life is a complex question which can be debated by the most intellectually advanced thinkers in the world and agreeable answers will not be forthcoming. From a moral and ethical perspective, many people will argue that human lives should be treated with the utmost value, respect and dignity. This view is arrived at as a result of our humanistic beliefs that each person in the world has an underlying worth, based on the right to live legally, economically and socially. These rights which are entrenched in the legislations of most world democracies should provide a level of protection as individuals, but we have to recognize that assigning any value other than moral can be controversial and ethically unacceptable. The value of a human life is deeply personal and is influenced by cultural, religious, ethical and philosophical considerations. Wars and their barbarism continue to be an abattoir of humans for many reasons which are beyond the scope of this editorial but war and death go together and are perpetrated by the beliefs of some who consider that in order to keep law and order in the world, sacrificing humans is a way of life. Costs can be calculated for everything in the world, including wars, catastrophes and other systematic failures often based on religion and culture, but costs can’t be assigned to a soul, which was devalued by a two dollar bullet. On October 7th, 2023, 1200 Israelis which included hundreds of women and children were murdered by Hamas. Retaliatory measures have resulted in the deaths of 25,000 Palestinians in Gaza. In Ukraine, the estimated death toll of civilians and soldiers is 500,000. Each day governments continue to send weaponized vessels by air, sea and ground to kill more soldiers and innocent civilians who did not ask for a war and did not request death. Each day a mother, father, brother or sister will get a knock on the door about the loss of their loved ones as a result of violence perpetrated by wars. The horror of a loss cannot be measured empirically and thus it’s up to those who received the news to shed the tears that comfort their souls. Those making the decisions to kill are people like you and I and I wonder if they got special dispensation from God that their morality won’t be compromised by planning and implementing war machines to kill. War decisions should not be subjective and conducted purely for egotistical causes as most are and the wombs that give birth to a life need to be respected. Humans are not guns or bombs, but are carriers trained to kill and as the blood flows out of their bodies, I wonder if they felt if the sacrifice was worth their life. The cowards of the countries who cannot place a cost on the lives of human beings used to shield their gutlessness, will never place themselves at risk on the frontlines. The International Court of Justice in The Hague is conducting public hearings from a complaint by South Africa claiming genocidal actions by Israel against Palestinians in Gaza. The facts are under deliberation but regardless of the decision, the world and the court should view this as a comparative cost of human lives without allowing confusion by the numbers of lives lost. Think of one dead life as one too many.

If you die tomorrow what should your life be worth? Death comes for all of us, and we can only hope to ameliorate the suffering of dying and that of our loved ones as honestly as we can in greeting it.
