L. Farrah Furtado – Personal yoga journey in new book

15 July 2019

International yoga teacher and author L. Farrah Furtado has released her latest book The Journey… Metamorphosis , an extensive compilation of her experiences in teaching and practicing yoga during the past decade.

After much success with her novels Pop Rock Cop, Her Apparitions and Euphoria, Furtado decided to follow a different literary path, one tracing her in-depth background in yoga.

“This book describes everything about my yoga journey, along with the essence of this transformative practice and how to teach yoga to others,” says Furtado, a leading yoga training teacher who has studied with the last living legend of Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Guruji BNS Iyengar, and Master Krishnamacharya, known as the Father of Modern Yoga.

The Journey… Metamorphosis has already hit 10 Amazon Best Seller Lists in North America and the UK, receiving positive reviews from beginner yogis to advanced teachers of yoga. The book is an experiential, comprehensive guide for yoga students, teachers who want to grow their yoga practice into a training facility, or those with a desire to start teaching yoga. It also helps dispel the many misconceptions about the ancient Indian discipline.

“All yogis can learn from this book, as there are great misinterpretations of yoga, meditation and pranayama, the practice of controlling one’s breath. My hope is to enlighten yoga practitioners with what I have learned, including the methodology of teaching yoga and the philosophy of yoga,” says Furtado.

The valuable reference of yoga teacher fundamentals is a compilation of the award-winning teacher and author’s personal insights, featuring practical instruction for more than 60 asanas, or body postures, in common English and Sanskrit names with descriptive images. It also carefully describes effective techniques and teaching tips in relatable language for yogis of all levels.

“The majority of the material in this book are the gems of what has been passed down from great yoga masters, such as Guruji BNS Iyengar, and the faculty at the legendary school I studied at, Krishnamacharya Shala in Mysore, India,” explains Furtado.

Furtado stresses the importance of maintaining harmony with the body, mind and spirit when practising yoga, something she helps people attain in the 200 hour yoga teacher training at her acclaimed Bend It Like Buddha Yoga school in the Algarve, Portugal. The beautiful scenery of Praia da Rocha in Portimão, one of the Algarve’s best beaches, has been the setting of her Ashtanga and Vinyasa yoga studio since 2015.

“Our 14-day retreat is an inspiring yoga program where beginners learn a variety of daily meditation and breathwork from experienced and compassionate instructors. It’s the first step in a life-changing journey of health and wellness,” Furtado says.

The Journey… Metamorphosis has also inspired the birth of the Bend It Like Buddha online school, where students are taught the subtle anahata, or heart chakra, and focus is on heart-centered living.

“We’re continuously striving to create and share heart-opening meditations for students so they can continue to deepen their yoga practice, and lead more meaningful, joyful and abundant lives,” she says.

Furtado plans to share this and more in the upcoming documentary Atha Gamma, which she produced. It is quickly gaining buzz, having been accepted to screen at various festivals in North

America and nominated for several awards. Making the short documentary on the science behind mindfulness and yoga was a natural part of her spiritual path, one that has led her to writing, teaching and now, filmmaking.

“It’s all part of my ongoing journey, my metamorphosis.”
