So, let’s get straight to the point.
According to our society, the idea is that when we are born, we are all equal. Treated equally. But is that really true? Let’s see…
All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. Endowed with reason and conscience, they should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood. Everyone has the right to access education. Everyone has the right to access healthcare. Everyone has the right to practice the religion of their choice. Everyone has the right to access employment without discrimination based on illness, disability, sex, color, or religion.
In a perfect world, this would be the ideal. But where do we actually live, after all? What planet? What galaxy?
If we are truly all equal, why are we so different? Yes, in an ethical and legal sense, all human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. This fundamental phrase is the starting point of Article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, guaranteeing that every person possesses the same worth before society.
The meaning of equality at birth:
- Human dignity: A person’s worth does not depend on who their parents are, where they are born, or their physical and mental condition.
- Equal rights: Everyone deserves the same guarantees of protection, freedom, and respect under the law.
- Fraternal duty: Society and individuals should act with solidarity and mutual respect.
The reality of our differences:
- Biological conditions: We are born with different physical traits, genetics, and biological capacities.
- Social context: The socioeconomic background and family into which each baby arrives vary immensely.
- The role of justice: The law and human rights exist precisely to balance these differences from birth, giving everyone fair opportunities.
It is what it is, and it will always, always be worth what it’s worth.
