Portuguese Canadian Walk of Fame

No dia 30 de maio, a 14.ª edição do Portuguese Canadian Walk of Fame terá o seu dia. Como membro da comissão organizadora, é uma experiência prazerosa garantir que a celebração proporcione um sentimento de orgulho e entusiasmo pelo reconhecimento de mais quatro indivíduos, reconhecidos pelas suas capacidades de se integrarem numa sociedade e de superarem as expectativas da generalidade comumente assumida.

Nenhuma organização está imune a dúvidas e críticas sobre a forma como opera e faz as suas escolhas de homenageados. O PCWOF tem uma declaração de missão e critérios que segue para chegar às conclusões sobre os indivíduos, estabelecidos há 14 anos e, certamente devido à sensibilidade das escolhas feitas, expõe frequentemente os diretores a difamações sobre os processos; no entanto, as invectivas de fanfarrões que vivem em caixas de ressonância, deturpando o trabalho árduo que outros realizam ano após ano e, no processo, menosprezando aqueles que foram distinguidos e aclamados por feitos excepcionais, refletem uma sociedade que glorifica a ignorância, e isto é perigoso em todos os aspetos. Já existe um negativismo excessivo no mundo de hoje e precisamos de contrariar isso com ações que promovam as realizações positivas das nossas mulheres e homens.

Os antigos compreendiam a importância do otimismo intergeracional e o ditado grego dizia que “uma sociedade se torna grande quando os velhos plantam árvores sob cuja sombra sabem que nunca se sentarão.” O PCWOF planta árvores exemplares para mostrar o que é possível quando mulheres e homens extraordinários querem dar um contributo à sociedade que vá além das próprias árvores. Mais do que nunca, precisamos de líderes que se cheguem à frente e liderem com integridade, porque o mundo mudou e não podemos assumir que cada geração deixará a seguinte mais rica, mais livre e mais próspera do que ela própria. Por esta razão, e de uma forma modesta, o Portuguese Canadian Walk of Fame fornece forças exemplares para dar esperança às gerações mais jovens, provando que o impossível é possível.

Parafraseando a minha amiga Aida Batista: “Parece que as pessoas estão a sofrer de distúrbio de atenção e não conseguem concentrar-se num texto que as possa fazer pensar. Tudo se está a transformar em fast food para ser consumido sem os garfos e facas das nossas mentes. Independentemente disso, precisamos de ter esperança na humanidade e acreditar na capacidade dos nossos netos para dar a volta aos desafios de hoje.”

Exemplos para os nossos filhos, este ano, são a Joaquina, a Sonia, o Tony e o António, cujas estrelas brilham com as suas ações e com a humildade na forma como conduzem as suas vidas.

No futuro, haverá mais heróis que estão agora e continuarão a tornar o mundo melhor. Seguramente houve algumas falhas prévias nas escolhas feitas, na medida em que os homenageados não cumpriram a integridade da declaração de nossa missão. Ter o rosto numa estrela no Portuguese Canadian Walk of Fame é um privilégio que deve ser respeitado, mas mesmo os homenageados que denigrem o Walk of Fame e a sua organização têm algumas qualidades redentoras, embora possivelmente não o suficiente para merecerem o seu lugar na parede. Independentemente disso, continuarei a admirar aqueles que se esforçam por fazer da integridade, da empatia e da compaixão o seu caminho para se superarem.

Portuguese Canadian Walk of Fame 

On May 30th, the 14th edition of the Portuguese Canadian Walk of Fame will have its day. As a member of the organizingcommittee it is a pleasurable experience to ensure the celebration provides a sense of pride and excitement about the recognition of four more individuals recognized for abilities to immerse in a society and exceeding the expectations of the commonalitygenerally assumed.

No organization is immune from questions and criticisms of how an organization operates and makes its choices of inductees. The PCWOF has a mission statement and criteria which it follows to reach the conclusions about individuals established 14 years ago and, certainly because of the sensitivity of choices made, often opens the directors to aspersions about processes ,  however, invectives from blowhards who live in echo chambers misrepresenting the hard work that others perform year after year and in the process belittlingthose who have been distinguished and acclaimed for exceptional deeds, reflects a society that glorifies ignorance and this is dangerous in every respect. There is already excessive negativism in the world today and we need to counteract that with actionswhich promote the positive accomplishments of our women and men. The ancients understood the importance of intergenerational optimism and the Greek adage goes that “a society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in.” The PCWOF plants exemplary trees to show what is possible when extraordinary women and men want to make a contribution to society over and above the trees.. More than ever we need leaders that will step up and lead with integritybecause the world has changed and we cannot assume that each generation will leave the next one wealthier, freer, and more prosperous than itself. For this reason. and in a small way, the Portuguese Canadian Walk of Fame provides exemplaryforces to give hope to younger generations proving that the impossible is possible. To paraphrase my friend Aida Batista “It seems that people are suffering from attention disorder and can’t concentrate on a text which may make them think. Everything is transforming into fast food to be consumed without the forks and knives of our minds. Regardless, we need to have hope in humanity and believe in the capacity of our grandchildren to turn today’s challenges around.”

Examples this year for our children are Joaquina, Sonia,, Tony and Antonio, whose star shines with their actions and humility on how they lead their lives.

In the future, there will be more heroes who are now and will continue to make the world better. Surely there have been some failures in the choices made as the inductees have not complied with the integrity of the mission statement. To have your face on a star in the Portuguese Canadian Walk of Fame is a privilege that should be respected but even those inductees who denigrate the Walk of Fame and its organization have some redeeming qualities, but possibly not enough to deserve their spot on the wall. Regardless, I will continue to be in awe of those who strive to make integrity, empathy and compassion their way to exceed.
