A helping hand

Créditos: Fanow

That’s what Trump has ended up giving the federal Liberals.  Trudeau’s lack of popularity and the timing of his resignation couldn’t have come out better if they had actually planned it.  Enter Mark Carney, who came right out of the gate gunning for Trump, so to speak.  Now the Liberals find themselves backed by all Canadians, in their battle of wits with the U.S. president.  Great timing for the Liberals, (due to Trump’s win and subsequent buffoonery), and bad timing for the Conservatives, for the very same reason.

Poilievre is seen to be cut from the same cloth as his American counterpart, and that gets people thinking that maybe they don’t want to see in Canada, what they are witnessing coming from south of the border.  I don’t believe one can possibly compare the two, if only because it’s difficult to believe that a Canadian leader would ever bow down to any hostile leader.  Nevertheless, people are always going to make the connection, purely because of the right-wing ideology that led the Conservative leader to power.  You can also bet that the opposition will be hitting them where it hurts during the campaign, as is customary.

I’m sure that all sides have plenty of ammunition to hurl at each other.  I’ve even read, recently, that Trump was supposedly waiting for the outcome of the snap election, before beginning negotiations.  I haven’t looked into the validity of this report, but if it’s correct, (to me it makes sense), it would say it all, even Trump sees the difference.  Most Canadians are rallying behind the flag these days, and the Liberals seem to be on the right side of the anti-Trump point of view.  That has to be a huge boost.  Poilievre, surely, feared this might happen, a subsequently prepared some contingencies, and if he didn’t, I can’t possibly understand why, since me and millions of others predicted this might happen.  It doesn’t take a genius, emotions play the biggest part in elections, which is why politicians love playing that card whenever they get a chance.

Look at Doug Ford, he’s riding the wave of popularity, and he’s no saint himself.  But he’s been standing up to Trump since this all became an issue.  Sure, he’s doing the dance, along with his mates, but you have to give him credit, he won another election by a wide margin, and he didn’t really need to worry about his missteps, of which there were a few.  He’s the guy shouting back at Trump!  It probably won’t be as easy for the eventual victor on April 28, but it will be tell-tale.  Whatever happens on the day will dictate the direction the country will take.  I despise politics because they are not to be trusted in any way, but if Canada doesn’t stand its ground for at least the next four years, the price to pay may be a heavy one.  We have everything to gain from being proud Canadians, and this sideshow of late has been both a curse and a blessing.  The world has been asleep at the wheel for too long.  It’s nice to see most of us awake!

Fiquem bem,

Raul Freitas
