Running as a political candidate… an emotional journey

Entering the political arena is a significant decision that requires careful consideration. Why would someone choose to run for political office? For many, it’s a desire to create change, to represent their community, or to advocate for issues they are passionate about. The motivations are deeply personal and often rooted in a commitment to service, justice, and the betterment of society. However, the path to candidacy is fraught with challenges, and the emotional landscape can be tumultuous.
Running for office is akin to embarking on an emotional rollercoaster, filled with exhilarating highs and profound lows. The initial excitement of launching a campaign can be exhilarating. The thrill of engaging with voters, sharing your vision, and rallying support is invigorating. Many candidates experience a sense of purpose and empowerment as they connect with their communities and advocate for change. Moments of triumph-like receiving endorsements, meeting fundraising goals, or witnessing enthusiastic support at rallies-can create a euphoric sense of validation.
However, the lows can be equally intense. Rejection, criticism, and the weight of public scrutiny can take a toll on a candidate’s mental and emotional well-being. The fear of losing, especially when invested emotionally and financially, can lead to anxiety and self-doubt. The pressure to perform and the realization that not everyone will agree or support your views can create feelings of isolation and vulnerability.
For many candidates, the most challenging moment comes on election night when results are announced. Losing can evoke a complex mix of emotions-disappointment, sadness, and sometimes even anger. It is not uncommon for candidates to question their worth and their decisions. The fear of being judged or viewed as a failure looms large, and many grapple with feelings of inadequacy.
However, losing can also be a moment of reflection and growth. Some candidates find solace in the relationships they’ve built and the platforms they’ve created, recognizing that their voices can still contribute to the dialogue, even outside of office. The experience can foster resilience and a deeper understanding of the political process, often motivating individuals to continue their advocacy in new ways.
For candidates from diverse ethnic backgrounds, the experience of running for office can carry additional layers of emotion. They often face unique challenges, such as navigating cultural expectations, overcoming stereotypes, and dealing with systemic barriers. The pressure to represent not only themselves but also their communities can be overwhelming. the most recent provincial election of February 27, 2025, there were three candidates from the Portuguese community taking a run at provincial politics, some experienced folks, and some newbies. I would like to acknowledge Paulo Pereira who ran as a Liberal candidate against the
leader of the NDP and faired nicely. For a first-time candidate my hat goes off to him for getting into the political arena against heavy odds. Well done!
Their candidacy can serve as a source of inspiration for others, sparking hope within underrepresented groups. Many candidates express strong desire to ensure that voices from diverse backgrounds are heard and represented on political discourse. This commitment can create a sense of pride and purpose, but it also carries the weight of responsibility. Engaging in the political process is a deeply emotional experience, regardless of the outcome. Candidates learn about their communities, confronting their biases, and develop empathy for differing perspectives. The journey can foster a sense of belonging and community, as candidates connect with supporters and allies who share their vision.
Ultimately, running for political office is not just about securing a position, it’s about participating in a democratic process that shapes the future. While the emotional highs and lows can be intense, the experience can also be transformative, providing candidates with invaluable lessons about themselves.
It’s been my personal experience, that sometimes losing makes you stronger and opens other doors. When one door closes another seems to open.
