Trump Jr.’s wife in hospital after opening white powder envelope

An envelope containing a white powdery substance caused Donald Trump Jr.’s wife and mother-in-law to be hospitalized on Monday morning, but the New York Police Department later determined the powder was not hazardous, a police official said.

The letter was addressed to Donald Trump Jr. and sent to a Manhattan apartment, the police official said.

A preliminary investigation indicates his mother-in-law, Bonnie Haydon, passed the letter to her daughter, Vanessa Trump, around 10 a.m. When she opened it at least one of them appeared to start coughing and feeling nauseous, the police official said.

The New York Police Department and Fire Department responded to a 911 call for medical help at a building on East 54th Street in the Sutton Place neighborhood.

Medical personnel from the Fire Department, after initially being called to stand by in case they were needed, ended up taking three people to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center. The Fire Department said they were classified as minor injuries and declined to identify the patients.

Donald Trump Jr.’s wife and mother-in-law were expected to be O.K., the police official said, and the powder was not dangerous.

Members of the New York Police Department’s Intelligence Bureau and hazardous materials teams were investigating the letter alongside the Secret Service.
