Man charged with 2nd-degree murder in death of woman in west end

Toronto police say a man has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of woman in a west end residential building early Wednesday.

The man was expected to appear in a Toronto courtroom at Old City Hall on Wednesday. His name has not been released.

Police from 11 division and paramedics were called to a highrise building in the area of Symington Avenue and Davenport Road, in the city’s Pelham Park neighbourhood, shortly before 3 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found the woman with “signs of trauma,” according to Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu, spokesperson for the Toronto Police Service.

Toronto paramedics said they tried to save the woman’s life, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Identity of victim not released

Police have not released the woman’s name or age. They have also not said whether the accused and victim were known to each other.

Officers are still trying to notify next of kin, Sidhu said.

Initially, police considered the death to be suspicious, but later they deemed it to be a homicide.

Officers are looking for surveillance camera footage in the building.

The death is Toronto’s 13th homicide of the year.

Anyone with any information relevant to the investigation is urged to call police.
