John Tory is set to make a campaign announcement about community safety, hours after two people were shot to death in separate incidents.
One man in his 30s was slain near a Danforth Avenue sports bar early Wednesday morning — just one month after the area was rocked by a mass shooting. Meanwhile, another male was found shot to death inside a vehicle in Toronto’s west end.
There have already been 63 homicides in the city this year, and more than 265 shootings according to Toronto police statistics, prompting calls for governments to act.
There were 66 homicides in 2017.
Tory has previously decried the violence, while Toronto police have taken some steps to curb the gun crime including enhancing overnight patrols.
Tory’s campaign said in a news release that today’s announcement is focused on “keeping Toronto safe.”
Tory is set to make his announcement at 11 a.m. ET at the Believe to Achieve Youth Centre in North York.
