Body of Toronto man found after canoe capsized in Kawartha Lakes area

One person is still missing and two are safe after a canoe carrying four men from Toronto tipped over in Sturgeon Lake early Sunday morning.

The body of a Toronto man has been found after a canoe holding four capsized in the Kawartha Lakes area in the middle of the night.

The four occupants, all men from Toronto, were paddling on Sturgeon Lake around 2:30 a.m. when the canoe tipped over. None of them were wearing life-jackets.

The body of one of the men was found at 5:25 p.m. Sunday. The fourth occupant is still missing; the search will continue until dusk and resume in the morning.

One man managed to swim safely to shore, while another was rescued from the water by Ontario Provincial Police officers in a civilian boat.

Underwater Search and Recovery units with the OPP are on scene to aid with the search as well as officers from the Aviation Services.

OPP Const. Jackie Hildenbrand said there will be another update on Monday.
