Life, sex and the age gap

Do relationships have to follow certain rules to be considered normal?  Many in society consider it taboo if there is a large age gap between partners, but particularly if it’s a younger woman with an older man.

Circumstantial observations by conservative people will reach the conclusion that this type of relationship is purely for economic reasons, particularly if the man is financially independent.  There is a subjective view in society of how love and relationships should present themselves.

Clearly this discussion is not about very young men and women, say under 18 years old, but about adults who can make independent decisions about whom and how to love.  So why do people still judge couples who are many years apart and why do men and women prefer younger or older partners?  There will always be contentious views surrounding age gap relationships.  For some they view this as a source of admiration while for others it’s something unsettling coupling up with a much younger person.  We could use Leonardo DiCaprio as an example who always seems to break up with girlfriends when they reach the age of 26.  Maybe for him it’s a psychological barrier because his relationships are obviously not about body shapes and attractive looks, but about sexual relationships.

Many studies have been conducted about what attracts us to each other and why we make the choices we make.  Men and women are expected to educate themselves on their sexual and beauty preferences while they are assessing a future with a permanent partner but even with all the experimentation and studies, marriages still break up at a rate of nearly 50%, which to people with experience in the matter is not surprising.  Never in history has sex been more available through porn and dating sites, providing men and women with opportunities to at least dream about alternatives.

Psychologically, this can lead to comparative alternatives to your personal relationship at home, often leading to infidelity because mentally, younger is supposed to be better.  The argument can be made that in strong relationships, people know a stable way of looking for love, but statistics suggest that past a certain age the relationship is no longer about sex but about respect for the institution that defines the relationship based on a set of moral or religious principles.

In many cultures it is not acceptable to fall in love with someone who is much older or younger than you, but how can you control your brain to reject something that you really want?  For both men and women, fertility tends to decline after the age of 35 and the downturn of sexual fortitude in men also declines depending on individual circumstances forcing men and women begin to look for the secret which will keep their vigour and sexuality at a satisfying level while trying to avoid the boredom and self-consciousness of physical attributes which begin to decline ponderably.  Communication is key at this stage of the relationship to understand what the priorities and goals are for their alliance.  People grow apart because the original marital objectives are no longer viable for the relationship.

Embarking on a large age gap liaison can have many negative implications as each partner can bring baggage from previous relationships which can be destructive such as family dynamics and changes that the person will be required to adopt because of the age gap engagement.  Studies have found that partners with more than a ten year age gap experience social disapproval, which has to be dealt with strength and dismissal about what others may think.

The age gap relationships are still a small percentage of overall alliances, however, the amount of infidelity is at an all-time high, which suggests that the amount of satisfaction in relationships is at an all-time low and it’s not expected to improve. People will always look for relationships which will stimulate their lives. If it’s younger/old, so be it.
