A renovação é sempre uma coisa boa se os conceitos subjacentes à nova visão forem para a melhoria da sociedade.
O Canadá acaba de passar por uma eleição federal em que milhões de canadianos esperavam que a renovação surgisse sob a forma de um novo partido no governo e, por conseguinte, de uma nova abordagem. No entanto, milhões de outras pessoas escolheram a renovação como a continuação das estratégias políticas anteriores, que foram desastrosas para o Canadá. Nunca podemos subestimar o poder dos seres humanos de serem imprevisíveis em relação ao rejuvenescimento, que pode assumir a forma de um status quo, mesmo que o mundo esteja a mudar drasticamente. O medo do desconhecido desperta as nossas ansiedades em relação a territórios desconhecidos, pelo que nos tornamos estagnados e votamos contra a mudança.
Também se espera uma mudança com a escolha do sucessor do Papa Francisco e vale a pena perguntar que tipo de renovação se pode esperar. Embora a maioria dos católicos concorde que o Papa Francisco era um homem do povo, quanto é que ele realmente realizou durante o seu mandato e será que a Igreja sob o seu comando evoluiu para acompanhar o ritmo de um mundo em mudança? Muitas das questões polémicas que assombraram a Igreja durante muitos anos mantêm-se, apesar dos apelos de muitos católicos à mudança. O essencial em qualquer religião é que existe um Deus, uma Igreja e que todos os seres humanos foram criados iguais. Hoje em dia, as igrejas baseiam-se na criação de feudos económicos e onde as palavras do Senhor são convenientemente manipuladas para aumentar os ouvidos e os olhos para os seus programas e recitais. As igrejas são um negócio como qualquer outro e a sua sobrevivência depende do dinheiro.
No mundo ocidental, o número de pessoas que frequentam as igrejas católicas diminuiu consideravelmente porque a política no seio da governação da igreja não mudou. A manifestação de emoção pela morte do Papa Francisco por parte de pessoas de todo o mundo foi uma combinação de presença ou uma oportunidade para uma selfie. É chocante para mim que um indivíduo como Donald Trump seja recebido no Vaticano como uma presença credível, depois da agitação que está a criar em todo o mundo. É um exemplo claro de que a bondade do Papa não estava a ser celebrada e que a sua presença aconteceu apenas para que todos vissem que estava lá. Sempre admirei os sacrifícios que os Papas fazem para lançar as sementes da inclusão em todo o mundo, mas o cínico em mim tende a associar o marketing da organização às sementes.
Quando se inicia o conclave para eleger o próximo Papa, muitos candidatos começam a disputar o lugar para se tornarem o próximo Papa. Será que é realmente importante quem será escolhido, dada a estrutura da política dentro do Vaticano que impede os candidatos de saírem das suas zonas de conforto insulares e das leis da igreja católica? A campanha é uma campanha que mede as capacidades dos candidatos com base na sua perceção das prioridades, das agendas e do carisma. Tem mais a ver com personalidade e perspicácia empresarial para fazer avançar a Igreja do que com a difusão do Evangelho de Jesus Cristo. Na minha opinião, não importará quem seja o novo Papa se a Igreja não se orientar para estar atenta aos sinais dos tempos e despertar o Espírito Santo da Igreja para se tornar uma Igreja do povo e não o país do Vaticano. O próximo Papa tem de deixar um legado de mudança que resulte em obrigações morais que reflitam as Palavras de Deus e na reforma das prioridades da Igreja para que reflitam as visões do mundo de hoje.

A new pope for all?
Renewal is always a good thing if the concepts behind the new vision are for the betterment of society.
Canada has just gone through a federal election where millions of Canadians were hoping that renewal would surface in the form of a new governing party and therefore a new approach. However, millions of other people chose renewal as the continuation of previous political policies, which have been disastrous for Canada. We can never underestimate the power of human beings to be unpredictable about rejuvenation which can take the form of a status quo, even if the world is dramatically changing. The fear of the unknown awakens our anxieties about unchartered territory, thus we become stagnant and we vote against change.
Change is also hoped for as Pope Francis’ successor is chosen and it’s also worth asking the question about what type of renewal which can be expected. While most Catholics agree that Pope Francis was a man of the people, how much did he really accomplish during his mandate and did the church under his command evolve to keep pace with a world in flux? Many of the controversial issues that have haunted the church for many years remain despite the pleadings of many Catholics for change. The bottom line in any religion is that there’s one God, one church and all human beings were created equal. Today churches are based on creating economic fiefdoms and where the words of the Lord are conveniently manipulated to increase ears and eyeballs for their programming and recitals. Churches are a business like any other and their survival is dependent on money. In the western world, the number of people attending Catholic churches has diminished considerably because the politics within the governance of the church haven’t changed. The show of emotion on the death of Pope Francis by people from around the world was a combination of showcasing a presence or an opportunity for a selfie. It is shocking to me that an individual such as Donald Trump is given a credible presence by the Vatican after the upheaval that he is creating around the world. It’s a clear example that the kindness of the Pope was not being celebrated and their attendance was about being seen to be there. I have always admired the sacrifices that Popes make to sow the seeds of inclusivity throughout the world, but the cynic in me tends to associate the marketing of the organization together with the seeds. As the conclave to elect the next Pope begins, many contenders begin jockeying for the job to become the next Pope. Does it really matter who will be chosen given the structure of the politics within the Vatican that prevent applicants from stepping out of its insular comfort zones and the laws of the Catholic church? The campaign is one that will measure the capacities of candidates on their perception of priorities, agendas and charisma. It has more to do with personality and business acumen to move the church forward than the spreading of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In my view it won’t matter who the new Pope is if the church doesn’t pivot to be attentive to the signs of the times and awakens the Holy Spirit of the church to become a people’s church and not the country of the Vatican. The next Pope must leave a legacy of change that will result in moral obligations reflective of the Words of God plus reforming church priorities to be reflective of today’s world views.
