A guerra na Ucrânia evidenciou a situação de muitas mulheres por todo o mundo. Ao vermos milhares de mulheres a caminhar com as suas crianças a reboque para as proteger do perigo, somos relembrados do papel que muitas adotam e como a sociedade as olha – como protetoras e cuidadoras. A dor nos seus rostos é emblemática do que está por vir, sendo que muitas se tornarão viúvas deslocadas até ao final da guerra. Enquanto celebrávamos o Dia Internacional da Mulher, muitos sugeriram que a pandemia regredirá o progresso da mulher em 30 anos, no que diz respeito à sua igualdade na vida política e profissional. Talvez demore mais 133 anos para se atingir uma igualdade sustentável para as mulheres.
No Norte da América, o fosso salarial existe, mas está em fechamento, e as oportunidades para subir a escada profissional estão a diminuir à medida que cada vez mais mulheres se vêm forçadas a tomar conta das suas próprias finanças. Em algum período da sua vida, nove em cada 10 mulheres canadianas desempenharão o papel de decisor financeiro. De 2000 a 2016, o fosso salarial diminuiu 24% a nível nacional. De acordo com os escalões elevados dos impostos, as mulheres continuam a ganhar 8.5% menos que os homens. As mulheres estão a abraçar o empreendedorismo, a educação e o treino a um nível superior aos homens. Estão a ter filhos mais tarde, mas continuam a priorizar o equilíbrio entre trabalho e vida pessoal, o que tem um impacto negativo no seu rendimento. As mulheres priorizam segurança ao invés de riqueza, querem que as decisões do planeamento revejam os seus valores. No geral, as mulheres são mais equilibradas na forma como vêm a sua vida e a sua responsabilidade para com a sociedade. Então, porque é que em 2022, continua a existir uma batalha entre sexos tal como tínhamos há vários anos? É porque o teto de vidro ainda não se partiu e a frustração está sempre presente nos desafios da força de trabalho. Quatro países nórdicos – Suécia, Islândia, Finlândia e Noruega, lideram o índice do teto de vidro e apresentam-se como os melhores lugares para as mulheres trabalharem. Já o Japão e a Coreia, onde muitas vezes as mulheres ainda escolhem entre a família e a carreira, estão em último. Países progressistas como o Canadá e os EUA estão na 20º posição entre 29 países, demonstrando que apesar de todo o sucesso, o progresso é lento.
Realidades em torno de temas como o feminismo, a misoginia e misandria, o sexismo benevolente e expectativas irrealistas ainda habitam em muitos lares e salas de reuniões. Alcançar a igualdade de género será possível quando palavras como feminismo forem compreendidas. O feminismo não é uma guerra contra os homens, é a defesa do direito das mulheres, mas é a defesa dos direitos das mulheres baseado na igualdade dos sexos. O debate em torno das mulheres será abordado pelo Milénio Stadium, e a pergunta base é “o que diferencia as mulheres dos homens?”. Colocando de parte as diferenciações físicas, as características para além do processo de pensamento não são muito distintas. Poderia estar implícito que historicamente os homens têm sido considerados uma raça superior e que as mulheres começaram a reivindicar os seus direitos no século passado, portanto, vai levar tempo para eclipsar todas as atitudes contrárias acumuladas há vários séculos. Foi também sugerido que um dos maiores inimigos das mulheres são as próprias mulheres, porque visam os homens como a oposição ao seu bem-estar em vez da sociedade como um todo. Fazer campanha apenas com base na premissa de que os homens são lixo não avançará a causa das mulheres na sociedade.
As mulheres têm de afirmar o seu lugar na sociedade a título individual e não esperar que outra pessoa defina quem elas são e o que é bom para elas. Muitas das expectativas das mulheres são hipócritas e vão umas contra as outras, sugerindo “Sê experiente. Sê sexual. Sê inocente. Sê provocadora.” Expectativas angustiantes que rebaixam as mulheres e, particularmente, mulheres mais jovens, aumentando os níveis de insatisfação com o corpo e problemas emocionais. Os internamentos hospitalares na sequência de tentativas de suicídio aumentaram em dois terços. Os papéis de género existiram sempre, contudo descrever como as pessoas devem agir, falar, se vestir, se arranjar e se comportar com base no sexo e papéis de género atribuídos são exagerados e incorretos.
Num país onde até Deus se está a tornar mais liberal, os ataques misóginos vão aumentar à medida que o respeito diminui. Deus foi utilizado para justificar a opressão e emancipação da mulher. Hoje, recorre-se ao mesmo Deus para abençoar casamentos do mesmo sexo e para abraçar mulheres de cor, LGBTQ+ e mulheres com deficiências. A mudança é lenta, mas certa, com um processo de pensamento inteligente, as mulheres podem chegar lá.

“Be a Lady”, they said
The war in Ukraine has shone a light on the predicament of many women throughout the world. Observing thousands of women walking with their children in tow to protect them from danger, we are reminded that the role that many adopt and society looks at, is that of protectors and caregivers. The pain on their faces is emblematic of things to come, as many of them will become displaced widows by the end of the war. As we celebrated International Women’s Day, some suggest that the pandemic will retract women’s progress by 30 years, regarding parity in politics and professional life. It may take another 133 years to reach a sustainable equality for women. In North America, salary gaps persist but closing, and opportunities to climb the professional ladder are decreasing, as more women are forced to take their finances into their own hands. At some point in their life, 9 out of 10 Canadian women will play the role of sole financial decision maker. From 2000 to 2016, the national salary gap decreased by 24%. In high tax brackets, women are still earning 8.5% less than men. Women are embracing entrepreneurship and pursuing education and training more than men. They are having kids later but continuing to prioritize their work-life balance, which has a negative impact on their income. Women prioritize security over affluence, want planning decisions to reflect their values. Overall women are more balanced on how they see life and their responsibilities to society. So why in 2022 do we continue to have the battle of the sexes as we did many years ago? It’s because the glass ceiling has not been shattered and frustration is ever-present in the challenges of workforce. Four Nordic countries – Sweden, Iceland, Finland, and Norway top the glass ceiling index as the best places for working women. Japan and Korea where women must often still choose between family and career, are at the bottom. Progressive countries like Canada and USA are around 20th out of 29 countries showing that despite all perceived success, studies show slow progress.
Realities surrounding topics such as feminism, misogyny and misandry, benevolent sexism and unrealistic expectations of women still occupy many homes and boardrooms. Achieving equality of the sexes will be helped when words such as feminism are understood. What feminism is not is a war against men, but it is the advocacy of women’s rights based on equality of the sexes. As a discussion ensued around women and coverage in Milénio Stadium, the initial question was “what differentiates men from women?”. Putting aside physiological distinctions, the characteristics other than thought processes aren’t that great. It could be implied that historically men have been considered the greater breed and that women began to assert their rights this past century so eclipsing all the contrarian attitudes of many centuries will take time. It has also been suggested that the greatest enemies of women are women because they target men as the opposition to their well-being instead of society as a whole. Campaigning solely on the premise that men are trash will not further the cause of women in society.
Women have to assert their place in society on an individual level and not wait for anyone else to define who they are and what is good for them. Many of the expectations of women are hypocritical and go against each other, suggesting “be experienced. Be sexual. Be innocent. Be dirty.” Distressing expectations that demean women and particularly young girls rising levels of body dissatisfaction and emotional problems are increasing. Hospital admissions for suicide attempts are up by two thirds. Gender roles have always existed, but outlining how people are expected to act, speak, dress, groom and conduct themselves based on our assigned sex and gender roles are inaccurate and exaggerated.
In a world where even God is becoming more liberal, misogynistic attacks will increase as respect decreases. God was used to justify oppression and emancipation of women. Today the same God is used to bless same-sex marriages and to embrace women of colour, LGBTQ + women and women with disabilities. Change is slow but surely, with some intelligent thought process, women can get there.
