Podemos reparar o que está partido?

Quando algo está partido, ou tentamos repará-lo ou descartamo-lo. O problema atual da sociedade é que há muito que está partido no mundo e a reparação será um exercício gigantesco, porque primeiro temos de controlar as narrativas da extrema-direita difundidas por influenciadores, streamers e provocadores, que são maioritariamente jovens e estão frustrados com o atual nível de governação. As suas mensagens não se preocupam nem têm em conta as dificuldades de muitos que criaram as democracias de que temos beneficiado, pelo menos desde o fim da Segunda Guerra Mundial, nem os sacrifícios feitos pelas gerações mais velhas, que criaram plataformas de que os jovens deveriam hoje tirar partido.

Os Estados Unidos, sob o “Rei Trump”, estão a construir charcos lamacentos onde o extremismo prospera, estendendo os seus tentáculos pelo mundo e criando uma retórica fascista cheia de preconceito e ódio. A intolerância que vemos nos EUA está agora a ser replicada em arenas políticas por todo o mundo, incluindo Portugal, um país que celebra 50 anos de liberdade democrática, conquistada com suor e lágrimas por aqueles que escolheram a liberdade em vez da xenofobia autocrática. Hoje, em Portugal, os noticiários estão cheios do nome de Mário Machado, que lidera uma organização chamada 1143, e, por extensão, do nome de André Ventura ou, como Isaltino Morais lhe chama, “Andresito”, que tem ligações à referida organização neonazi. A normalização do 1143 por André Ventura cria uma identidade para o Chega assente no ódio e com efeitos reais, à escala mundial, na propagação do extremismo, sendo aceitável para pelo menos 30% da população portuguesa, além de tantos outros imigrantes.

O grupo neonazi detido pela polícia portuguesa estava bem armado e poderá ter estado a planear ataques contra aqueles que o Chega afirma serem os nossos inimigos, nomeadamente imigrantes e ciganos. André Ventura recusa-se a negar a sua existência e o seu apoio ao Chega, aceitando assim as suas ideias e escolhendo o silêncio como forma de resposta às perguntas. O Chega diz querer os votos de todas as pessoas comuns, mas não daqueles contra quem espalha ódio. A parte triste é que os portugueses têm outra oportunidade de mostrar ao Chega que este tipo de política não serve o seu país, no dia 8 de fevereiro, mas podem estar confusos depois de o primeiro-ministro de Portugal ter demonstrado cobardia ao não apoiar princípios democráticos e ao sugerir que não apoiaria nenhum dos candidatos. Isso não é liderança, e a sua falta de coragem enviou ao país a mensagem de que era aceitável não votar num novo presidente e também aceitável votar no Chega. É este o tipo de liderança de que precisamos? Um homem de pés frios? Ventura promete “bater com o punho na mesa” por Portugal e acabar com a corrupção e o roubo. Talvez o murro devesse começar pela sua própria cabeça e limpar o cérebro de ideais corruptores que destruirão Portugal. Sugere que Sócrates e Isaltino irão para a prisão. Embora a prisão não seja um lugar estranho para nenhum deles, ter Ventura como juiz e júri sentado no trono da presidência dará origem ao renascimento do fascismo. Poderá até copiar o exército do ICE dos Estados Unidos, expulsando imigrantes e impedindo outros de entrar; talvez devesse consultar Trump e construir um muro.

As pessoas têm de despertar para a realidade das visões extremistas, mas só os eleitores podem mudar isto. Como disse o Primeiro- Ministro do Canadá, Mark Carney: “Se não está à mesa, está no menu”. Não sejam como Montenegro, Cotrim e outros que agora estão no menu de André Ventura. Falando da minha cidade, Toronto, foi interessante ver que pouco mais de mil votos foram expressos entre mais de 48.000 eleitores elegíveis. 69,19% dos votos foram para o Chega. Isso levou-me a questionar o processo de pensamento de imigrantes que apoiam o ódio numa terra distante, enquanto celebram a sua boa sorte numa democracia canadiana. Muitos desses eleitores viveram os horrores do fascismo e de Salazar. É esta a política que estão a apoiar? Os sentimentos nostálgicos destes eleitores não promovem o respeito mútuo na sociedade, e a sua retórica não pode ser feita de palavras vazias e mentiras baseadas numa ignorância retórica. É por isso que os comunistas não crescem. Mentes pequenas olham sempre para o mundo através dos olhos daqueles que fazem campanha pelo discurso do medo. Já agora, onde estavam os outros cerca de 47,000 eleitores elegíveis? Provavelmente a ver um jogo de futebol.

Can we repair what is broken?

When something is broken you either attempt repairs or you dispose of it. The current problem in society is that there is much broken in the world and the repair will be a gargantuan exercise because first we have to control far right narratives of influencers, streamers and provocateurs, which are mostly young and frustrated with the current level of governance. Their messaging does not care or take into account the hardship of many that created the democracies that we have enjoyed at least since the end of the second world war and the sacrifices made by older generations, creating platforms that young people should be taking advantage of today.

The United States, under King Trump, is constructing muddy ponds where extremism is festering, spreading its tentacles into the world and creating fascist rhetoric filled with bigotry and hatred. The intolerance that we see in the USA is now being duplicated in political arenas throughout the world, including Portugal, a country that is celebrating 50 years of democratic freedom, conquered with sweat and tears by those who chose freedom rather than autocratic xenophobia. Today in Portugal, the newsreels are filled with the name of Mario Machado who heads an organization called 1143 and by extension, the name of Andre Ventura or as Isaltino Morais refers to him “Andresito”which has ties to the aforementioned neo-nazi organization. The normalization of 1143 by Andre Venture creates an identity for Chega which is based on hate and has real worldwide effects on the spread of extremism and is palatable by at least 30% of the Portuguese population plus just as many immigrants.

The neo-Nazi group apprehended by the Portuguese police were well armed and may have been planning attacks against those who Chega professes to be our enemies namely immigrants and gypsies. Andre Ventura refuses to deny their existence and support for Chega, therefore accepting their ideas and choosing silence as a method of answering questions. Chega says that they want the votes of all common people, but not those he spreads hate against. The sad part is that the Portuguese have another opportunity to show Chega that their type of politics is not for their country on February 8th, but they must be confused when the Prime Minister of Portugal showed cowardice by not supporting democratic principles and suggesting that he would not support either candidate. That’s not leadership and his gutlessness sent a message to the country that it was fine not to vote for a new president and also ok if they chose to vote for Chega. Is this the type of leadership we need? A man with cold feet? Ventura promises to “punch the table” for Portugal and end corruption and thievery. Maybe the punch should start with his head and clean his brain of corruptive ideals that will destroy Portugal. He suggests that Socrates and Isaltino will be put in jail. While jail will not be a strange place for either, with Ventura being judge and jury sitting on the throne of the presidency will give rise to the rebirth of fascism. He will possibly copy the ICE army from the United States expelling immigrants and preventing others from coming in, maybe he should consult with Trump and build a wall instead.

People have to wake up to the reality of extremist views but only the voters can change this. As Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney said, “If you are not at the table, you are on the menu”. Don’t be like Montenegro, Cotrim and others who are now on the menu of Andre Ventura.

It made me wonder about the thought process of immigrants supporting hatred in a land far away while celebrating their good fortune of a Canadian democracy. Many of those voters experienced the horrors of fascism and Salazar. Is this the politics they are supporting? The nostalgic sentiments of these voters do not advance societal respect for one another and their food can’t be empty words and lies based on rhetorical ignorance. This is why communists don’t grow. Small minds always look at the world through the eyes of those who will campaign for discourse and fear. By the way, where were the other 47,000 or so eligible voters? Probably watching a soccer game.
