Após um fim de semana repleto de eventos onde celebrámos o Dia da Mãe e fizemos uma angariação de fundos para a Eva, o nosso confinamento temporário está lentamente a ver um vislumbre de liberdade através dos fragmentos da nossa mente. Faz sentido falar sobre a comunidade luso-canadiana. Tendo vivido numa população e pessoalmente identificando-me como “luso-canadiano” nos últimos 50 anos, cheguei ao fim de semana com um sentimento de esperança de que a comunidade que eu trato como “minha” tivesse virado a esquina no avanço da nossa visão e generosidade para com os outros.
É necessário compreendermos o significado de comunidade, reconhecer o seu sentido:
“A comunidade é um grupo de pessoas que vive no mesmo lugar ou com características particulares em comum, dispondo de um sentimento de companheirismo como resultado da partilha universal de comportamentos, interesses e objetivos.” Esta descrição corresponde à comunidade luso-canadiana em Toronto e na GTA, onde existe a apresentação de uma grande diáspora portuguesa. Não há dúvida que existem muitos aspetos positivos na população lusófona onde o trabalho árduo continua a prevalecer, apesar de serem notórias mudanças substanciais, particularmente nas dinâmicas de respeito e compromisso com a proteção dos mais vulneráveis.
Pode assumir-se que a maioria dos Clubes e Associações estão a passar por um período de stress financeiro, tal como o resto do mundo. Os provedores de cultura têm sido silenciados e não existe comunicação. Talvez esta seja uma oportunidade para estas organizações refletirem sobre o seu propósito e a forma como a cultura se deve refletir no futuro, para o futuro das nossas crianças e jovens adultos. Que se juntem menos grupos, mas melhores para prevenir o desaparecimento de uma boa ideia em prol dos benefícios egoístas de alguns. Nesta conjuntura, na vida da “nossa” comunidade, precisamos de vozes fortes e que os que são silenciados falem mais alto. Organizações representativas como a ACAPO tornaram-se numa representação antiquada do seu mandato e compromisso com a comunidade. É urgente que haja estratégia e renovação.
Os Clubes organizam aglomerações com as afirmações padrões, dentro de quatro paredes de um edifício “bairrista”, que se dissipa ao fim do primeiro copo de vinho e acaba com uma mensagem sem significado. É preciso uma organização forte para identificar, influenciar e promover as necessidades modernas de uma comunidade estagnada e sem união que se perdeu na estrada de tijolos amarelos. Está na altura de organizações alternativas como o FPCBP tomarem uma posição, emergirem e assumirem um papel de liderança.
Só ocorrerão verdadeiras mudanças quando exigirmos mais da sociedade. Se esperarmos que a oportunidade perfeita traga a mudança, nunca acontecerá. Diga sim ao desmantelamento dos “confortos” e “interesses” culturais existentes e deixe as pessoas descobrirem as soluções.
Tal como o resto do mundo, a comunidade lusófona irá experienciar a mudança, em muitos casos, indesejada. Este é o momento em que John “Cherry Blossom” Tory não permite aos cidadãos olharem para as árvores, e os restantes políticos dão-nos tudo o que precisamos e pedimos. Tanto ética como mentalmente, poderemos voltar ao novo normal depois de aceitar todo o dinheiro que nos foi oferecido pelo Governo? O comunismo, no seu melhor, a ser utilizado com fins políticos. Os luso-canadianos deveriam utilizar este tempo para refletir, como comunidade, e efetuar mudanças tendo em conta a nova realidade.
Ao refletir nos vários anos de apoio à “minha” comunidade, cheguei à conclusão que existe um momento para parar e deixar que outros ocupem esse lugar. A minha participação será reduzida e, com a exceção de alguns projetos pelos quais assumi responsabilidade, a minha cultura será praticada na sua maioria de forma privada.
Sábado, 9 de maio de 2020, foi o dia em que cheguei à conclusão de que vivo numa comunidade desinteressada, habituada a ter informação e entretenimento de forma gratuita, sem pensar que na vida tudo acarreta um preço.

Memo to a Community
After an eventful weekend where we celebrated Mother’s Day, held a fundraising event on Saturday (9) for Eva, and our temporary incarceration is slowly allowing a ray of freedom to peek through fragments of our minds, speaking about the Luso-Canadian community made sense. Having lived in a populace and personally identified as a “Portuguese-Canadian” for the last 50 years, I went into this weekend with a feeling of hope that the community I call mine may have turned the corner in the advancement of our vision and generosity to others.
To understand the meaning of community, recognition of what it means, is necessary:
“A community is a group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common, providing a feeling of fellowship with others as a result of sharing universal attitudes, interests and goals”. This description can certainly describe the Luso-Canadian society in Toronto and GTA where the cultural aspect of a large Portuguese diaspora exists. There is no doubt that there are many positive aspects to the Luso populace where hard work continues to prevail although substantial changes are noticeable, particularly encompassing aspects of respect and commitment in the protection of our most vulnerable.
It can be assumed that most of the Clubs and Associations are experiencing financial stress as most of the rest of the world is. These purveyors of culture have been silenced and communication is non-existent. Perhaps this is an opportunity for these organizations to reflect on their purpose and how culture should be reflected in the future for the future of our children and young adults. Let’s have fewer but better groups to prevent complete dilution of a good idea for the egotistical benefits of a few. Strong voices are needed at this juncture in the life of “our” community and those which are silent should speak loud. Representative organizations such as ACAPO have become an antiquated representation of its mandate and commitment to its community. Strategy and renewal is urgently needed.
Clubs conduct gatherings with the standard utterances within the four walls of a “bairrista” building which dissipate with the first glass of wine and end up as meaningless messages. A strong organization is needed to identify, lobby and promote the modern needs of a stagnated and disjoined community which has been lost on the yellow brick road. It’s time for alternative organizations such as the FPCBP to finally take a stand and emerge from the grass and take the leadership role that their name implies.
Real changes will only happen when we demand more from society. If we wait around for the perfect opportunity to effect change it will never happen. Say yes to dismantling the existing cultural “comforts” and “interests” and let the people figure out the solutions.
Like the rest of the world, the Luso community will experience change and, in many cases, unwanted. These are the times when John “Cherry Blossom” Tory doesn’t allow citizens to look at trees, and the rest of the politicians give all we want and need. Ethically and mentally can we ever return to the new normal after taking all the offered government money? Communism at its best being used for political purposes. Luso-Canadians should use this time to reflect as a community and effect change in view of the coming changes.
Reflecting on many years of giving back to “my” community, I came to the realization that there comes a time to step back and let others do it. My participation will be reduced and with some exceptions of projects that I assumed responsibility for, my culture will be practiced for the most part privately.
Saturday, May 9th, 2020, is the day that I came to the realization that I live in a uninterested community used to getting information and entertainment for free without thinking that everything in life carries a cost.
One day I will explain my decision to Eva.
