Guerra de mentes intelectuais

As crianças em idade escolar estão a ser usadas como peões num jogo de xadrez entre sindicatos, governos e, em alguns casos, pais. As crianças não devem sofrer as consequências das guerras mentais entre fações movidas pelo poder, por conveniência política. Embora o conceito de igualitarismo seja uma filosofia que todos adotam nesse conflito, a realidade é que o elitismo está em jogo por parte de todos os envolvidos, sugerindo que a linha entre o certo e o errado não está num ponto a meio, mas onde as fações plantam a sua aposta.

Já existe miséria coletiva neste país, à medida que lidamos com a inflação, o aumento de custos e o aumento geral da pobreza. Para quê trazer mais destabilização para as pessoas que estão a ter dificuldade em lidar com as suas circunstâncias diárias? O Governo de Ford decidiu recorrer a uma cláusula (secção 33 da Carta de Direitos) para acabar com as negociações com a CUPE, que representa 55,000 trabalhadores na província de Ontário, criando uma tempestade de união entre todos os sindicatos e originando uma guerra intelectual de justiça e indignação perante o anúncio de bloqueio dos direitos dos trabalhadores. Utilizar esta cláusula, como muitos sugerem, é um abuso de poder e esta cláusula não foi pensada para ser utilizada desta forma. A linha dura adotada pelo Governo de Ontário foi baseada numa série de opções prejudiciais e nunca deveria ter ido tão longe. Embora seja vergonhoso que as negociações tenham sido realizadas em pleno ano letivo, e não antes, mostra uma abordagem sem coração ao aspeto mais importante da vida escolar, que são os alunos. Elegemos representantes para a legislatura para gerir o equilíbrio entre os interesses conflitantes de professores, alunos e pais e, num caso como este, é precisamente por isto que os elegemos. Estão a falhar miseravelmente na administração da relação instável entre os sindicatos educacionais e as políticas governamentais. Apesar de os sindicatos parecerem ter o direito de greve, quando deve ser dada consideração acima desses direitos para o bem do povo? Ford enfureceu todos os sindicatos trabalhistas, pois a implementação desta cláusula poderia criar um precedente para todas as futuras negociações governamentais. Politicamente, Ford tem muito a perder, mas talvez o seu raciocínio se baseie na ideia de que tem quatro anos de poder ininterrupto no Queens Park devido à sua vitória com maioria na última eleição.

Tanto os sindicatos como o governo estão a atormentar os pais, cujas vidas estão a ser interrompidas e a obrigá-los a escolher lados de uma disputa que ninguém pode vencer. Estas atitudes incomodativas, adotadas por ambos os lados, criarão um futuro de discurso e falta de cooperação nos próximos anos. Embora seja compreensível que os trabalhadores se sintam em desvantagem económica com os seus salários atuais, tendo perdido cerca de 8% do seu poder de compra ao longo dos últimos dois anos, o facto é que os governos têm uma responsabilidade fiscal para com todos os eleitores. Atualmente, existem vários trabalhos bem remunerados, se estes membros da CUPE optarem por melhorar a sua situação financeira, então ameaçar sair, mas permanecer no sindicato é uma tática que já não funciona e permanecer no sindicato garante que se mantenham pobres para sempre, exceto para aqueles que veem uma pensão e benefícios no final da linha. O facto de Ford estender uma bandeira branca para acabar com a greve não representa o fim de futuros debates.

A realidade é que todos devem assumir que os alunos devem estar numa sala de aula.A perda de aprendizagem em sala de aula desde o início da pandemia resultou num nível de educação deteriorado, do qual a maioria dos alunos não se recupera. Todas as expectativas de recuperação económica e boa qualidade de vida estão a ser esmagadas pela inflação, escassez de medicamentos, um sistema de saúde fracassado e cartéis que controlam o quanto pagamos pelos produtos. Os cidadãos desta província e país merecem uma pausa nisto de serem utilizados como instrumentos nas guerras políticas e trabalhistas. Pensem nos alunos, por uma vez que seja, e nos pais que se sacrificam para criá-los.

“Quando você é bom nalguma coisa, você diz a toda a gente. Quando você é ótimo em alguma coisa, eles vão-lhe dizer a si.” Neste momento, essa luta é apenas para ser bom e estamos cansados de ouvir isso.

Intellectual Mind Wars

Our school kids are being used as pawns in a chess game by unions, governments and in some cases, parents. Kids should not suffer the consequences of the mind wars between power driven factions for political expediency. While the concept egalitarianism should be a philosophy that everyone adopts this conflict, reality is that elitism is at play by all concerned suggesting that the line between right and wrong is not somewhere in the middle but where the factions plant their stake.

There is already collective misery in this country as we deal with inflation, rising costs and the overall increase of poverty. Why bring more destabilization to people who are having a hard time dealing with daily circumstances? The Ford government decision to use the notwithstanding clause (section 33 of the Charter of Rights) to end negotiations with CUPE who represent 55,000 workers in the province of Ontario has created a storm of unity for all labour unions, creating an intellectual war of righteousness and indignation citing the trampling of the rights of workers. Using the clause, many suggest, is an abuse of power and it was never meant to be used in this manner. The hardline adopted by the government of Ontario was based on a series of bad options and should have never gone this far. While it is disgraceful that negotiations were carried into the school year and not prior, shows a heartless approach to the most important aspect of school life, which are the students. We elect representatives to the legislature to manage balance between competing interests of teachers, students and parents and in a case like this is precisely why we elect them. They are failing miserably at managing the unstable relationship between educational unions and government policy. While unions may appear to have the right to strike, when should consideration be given ahead of those rights for the good of the people? Ford has now upset all labour unions as the implementation of the notwithstanding clause could provide a precedent for all future government negotiations. Politically, Ford has a lot to lose, but the thinking may be that he has four years of uninterrupted power at Queens Park due to his majority win in the last election.

Both the unions and government are tormenting parents whose lives are being disrupted and provoking them to choose sides in a dispute that no one can win. The vexatious attitudes adopted by both sides will create a future of discourse and lack of co-operation for years to come. While it’s understandable that workers feel economically disadvantaged with their current wages having lost 8% of their purchasing power in the last 2 years, the bottom line is that governments have a fiscal responsibility to all voters. Currently there are plenty of good paying jobs, if these members of CUPE chose to improve their financial standing in life, so threatening to leave but staying in the union is a tactic that no longer works and continuing in the union ensures that they remain poor forever, except they see a pension and benefits at the end of the line. The fact that Ford has extended an olive branch to end the strike will not be an end to future discourse.

The reality that everyone must adopt an attitude that students should be in class. The loss of in-class learning since the pandemic began has resulted in a deteriorated level of education from which the majority of students won’t recover. All expectations of economic recovery and good quality of life are being crushed by inflation, shortages of medicines, a broken healthcare system and cartels who control what we pay for products. The citizens of this province and country deserve a break from being used as instruments in political and labour wars. Think of the students for once and the parents that sacrifice to raise them.

“When you are good at something, you’ll tell everyone. When you’re great at something, they will tell you.” At this point, this fight is about only being good and we are sick and tired of hearing it.
