There are very few conversations today where the topic of AI doesn’t come out of someone’s lips.  There is also a lot of evidence out there that most people do not understand the meaning of Artificial Intelligence and its effects on their lives.  The AI intervention on our lives will come gradually but perceptibly, and embracing it will go a long way to decrease the anxiety that the continuous bombardment of news about the catastrophic impacts of AI will impact on every citizen of the world.  The biggest impact will be on our jobs and lifestyles, as technical advances take over much of the menial work being done by people with lower education who do not have opportunities to go up the employment ladder.

Today’s workers in developed countries have advanced attitudes of self-servitude where loyalty to companies has been compromised but the expectations of good salaries and the demands of recognition of the workers value continue to spiral out of control.  Many of the demands are economically unrealistic and in Canada we can already observe the consequences with lower GDP and declining productivity levels.  Yes, working from home, diminished hours, more vacations, and superior benefit packages may be beneficial for the workers’ mental health but consumers cannot afford the financial consequences to pay for all wants with reduced financial yields for corporations.  As a result, corporate entities will have no choice but to implement measures to change how work is performed and eliminate the impact of laziness and lack of loyalty which have permeated the laboural forces.

Some statistics worth noting that have or will have impact on workflow include: in quarter # 2, 12.2 percent of Canadian businesses reported using AI in their workflows or production, according to Stats Can.  Further, this represents a doubling from 2024 when only 6.1 percent  of businesses reported the same Q2 and 89.4% of businesses reported no change in employment levels following the introduction of AI tools.  This means that integration of AI in workplaces will result in freezing or diminishing of new hires and these are jobs that will not be available again.

As we celebrated Labour Day in North America on September 1st, 2025, we recognized and celebrated the contributions of workers across North America.  These celebrations should also be a reflection of continued uncertainty about a rapidly changing labour market due to the influxion of AI in many aspects of the labour force.  We are entering a time of disruption, uncertainty and constant change and staying ahead means learning faster, adapting smarter and leading with purpose.

Universities and other education agencies will have to adapt to these changes and students will need AI to decipher what perhaps will be their career choice.  It’s just not good enough to go to higher education without a strategic plan in hand to establish how a human (you) and technology can partner and this strategy will encompass every aspect of labour, including construction.  Calloused hands will be needed to build the buildings and infrastructures of the future, however, many of the tasks will be simplified by robotic systems which will result in faster and more precise construction managed by AI agents working alongside each worker receiving instructions and replicating the entire workforce of an organization.

Last spring JD Vance addressed World Leaders and presented a compelling framework about leveraging AI technology to boost worker productivity and reduce our reliance on mass low-skilled immigration.  The elimination of low-skills will improve the standard of living for workers if high-skills are required for future employment in Canada.

AI continues to progress with many questions being asked about how dangerous or helpful it is.  There’s no turning back so we may as well embrace it because it’s going to affect you.  Are you ready to pivot if your job is replaced tomorrow?
