A flor oficial dos avós é a flor “forget-me-not”.

Celebrate the Past

September 13th is the day that grandparents are celebrated and, in this week’s Milénio Stadium, we honor grandparents. Contributors to this newspaper dignify and praise those who for the most part are the only connection to their family’s background by writing personal memories about their grandparents.

Grandparents Day serves to pay tribute and recognize the contributions of grandparents in our lives. Society and its family ties provide an important view of the past and about the values, beliefs and ideals we treasure today.

National Grandparents Day was founded by Jacob Reingold and Mariam McQuade in 1973 in West Virginia and in 1978 a bill was signed officializing the day. President Carter said, “The elders of each family have the responsibility for setting the moral tone for the family and for passing the traditional values to their children and grandchildren”. Eventually other countries adopted this day to honor them.

In reading Carter’s phrase, a sense of conflicting emotions permeated my mind creating mental strife which I wish engaged more empathy for my past. Looking back at who I am and then becoming a grandparent, leaves my being in affliction but with a fervor of what the future may still offer. It is with certainty that for most, being a grandparent or thinking of one who may have passed away provides joy in the current sense or warm memories of the past. There is no empathy being sought by my story as we are what we make of our lives. Becoming the fruit of the seeds that my grandparents planted has not always been an inspirational experience even if there is a sense of pride about the family I came from. I’m angry about the loss of opportunity to embrace my grandchildren. Life teaches ignorance to many who may feel that making love a hostage to be used for principled reasoning can be justified. The sadness of not embracing my grandchildren can be substituted by hope and the satisfaction that they are good people.

Avós, Raízes e Nós is a book to be presented at Casa do Alentejo on Sunday September 13th, 2020 @ 3:00pm. It’s a collaboration of Aida Batista, Ilda Januário and Manuela Marujo who have lovingly stitched together stories of several individuals with memories to share. When the book was being conceived, my friend Aida Batista asked if I would write a story about my grandparents. This request created an internal struggle that made me examine every aspect of my life, which is still on-going today.

Conflicting emotions and assaying memories resulted in a decision not to write the story as the work in progress to decipher the acceptance of my history requires more work to understand why “I am”.

The hardships of my grandparents and the memories I have are not many. The misfortune of being poor, with too many children at a time of political goonery created an atmosphere where love was not a priority.

Survival was the main endeavor and thus I see my grandparents through eyes being shaded by the blowing sand of the beach sand dunes in Castelo do Neiva. The sand is slowly being removed grain by grain, but acceptance will take some time.

The official flower of the grandparents is “forget-me-not”. I will never forget mine and will honor their legacy petal by petal until full embrace.

Honor yours.
