C-TIFF – Lentes do Mundo

As artes e a cultura fazem parte das nossas vidas. De quinta-feira, 8, a 18 de setembro, o Festival Internacional de Cinema de Toronto está agendado para se realizar em Toronto, incorporando a pompa e a circunstância que merece. A nossa cidade será o foco da atenção mundial, atraindo o melhor e mais brilhante do mundo do cinema. Após a suspensão em 2020 e 2021, onde o Festival se realizou virtualmente, este ano assistiremos ao regresso do trabalho em rede e dos eventos de gala.

Serão exibidos cerca de 200 longas-metragens completas e 40 curtas-metragens, destacando o mundo criativo e investigativo do cinema. Para uma cidade como Toronto, a notoriedade que o Festival traz não tem preço. Para além do valor económico, as visitas de estrelas de cinema e de fãs, colocam Toronto no mapa do mundo. Portugal será representado por dois filmes “O Homem do Lixo” e “Ice Merchants” mais duas curtas-metragens adicionais, em cooperação com outros países, nomeadamente “Mato Seco em Chamas” e “Pacificação”. Qual é a atração do filme que nos mistifica e nos leva a um mundo com o qual a maioria das pessoas só pode sonhar? Talvez desejando estar em lugares onde o filme nos leva, nos preencha vazios que nunca poderemos preencher na vida real. Talvez o facto de colocarmos em pedestais atores que jogam jogos para viver, nos permita sonhar em ser como eles. Os filmes vão levar-nos de volta no tempo e educar a sociedade sobre os males do mundo, que foram semeados através das injustiças e da criminalidade. O filme mostra-nos como amar, falhar, matar e fingir, aprender, tirar e apreciar o desejo ou a saudade, onde o sol nasce e se põe. No final, na sua maioria, os filmes são compilações de sonhos irrealistas que nos permitem fingir sobre momentos irrealistas no tempo. Mas há também as visões da exposição às realidades do mundo. Forças destrutivas da dor e do sofrimento, guerras convencionais ou químicas e holocaustos. A desumanidade do homem para com os homens e as almas gémeas que levam a cabo a obra de Deus.

Já não se pode esconder nada dos ecrãs para o nosso consumo e esta abundância de realidades irreais ou melhora a nossa alma ou destrói as nossas capacidades intelectuais para funcionar normalmente. À medida que vivemos uma vida sem incidentes, os nossos sonhos são preenchidos por outros, criados para manipular as nossas mentes, levando-as a acreditar que tudo é possível. Que tolice a nossa pensar que o impossível é possível quando as possibilidades só estão dentro de nós. No final, é mais fácil ver o mundo através das lentes de uma câmara em vez das nossas próprias ações.

Toronto será o centro de tudo o que foi descrito acima. Milhares de pessoas a ver centenas de filmes que não contribuirão para o nosso desenvolvimento intelectual, mas que proporcionarão um refúgio temporário contra a sordidez que este mundo tem para oferecer. Por isso, ria, chore, zangue-se e dance a ver a sua vida a passar, porque não está a criar o seu próprio filme. Vá e olhe para as estrelas com corpos e trajes perfeitos e finja que o seu corpo se assemelha ao deles e não se esqueça do autógrafo.

À medida que a cortina desce, a esperança é que alguns se iluminem para viverem uma vida melhor porque viram um filme. Vou ficar em casa e ver um filme antigo do Elvis e fingir que ainda tenho o meu afro.

C-TIFF – Lenses from the World

Arts and culture are part of our lives. From Thursday September 8th to the 18th, the Toronto International Film Festival is scheduled to be held in Toronto, incorporating the pomp and circumstance it deserves. Our city will be the focus of worldwide attention attracting the brightest and best of the film world. After the suspension in 2020 and 2021, where the Festival was held virtually, this year will see the return of networking and gala events. About 200 full feature films and 40 short films will be shown, highlighting the creative and investigative world of film.
For a city such as Toronto, the notoriety that the Festival brings is priceless. In addition to economic value, visits by film stars and fans, places Toronto on the world map. Portugal will be represented by two Films “O Homem do Lixo” and “Ice Merchants” plus two additional shorts in co-operation with other countries namely “Mato Seco em Chamas” and “Pacificação.” What is the attraction of film that mystifies us and takes us into a world most people can only dream about? Perhaps wishing to be in places where film takes us, fulfills voids we can never fill in real life. Maybe the fact that we place on pedestals actors who play games for a living allows us to dream of being like them. Films will take us back in time and educate society on the ills of the world, which were sown through injustices and criminality.

Film shows us how to love, to fail, to kill and to pretend, to learn, takes and to appreciate the longing of where the sun rises and falls.

In the end, for the most part, films are compilations of unrealistic dreams that allow us to pretend about unrealistic moments in time. But there are also the visions of the exposure to realities of the world. Destructive forces of pain and suffering, drug and conventional wars and holocausts. Man’s inhumanity to men and kindred souls carrying on the work of God.

No longer can anything be hidden from the screens for our consumption and this abundance of unreal realities either enhances our souls or destroys our intellectual capacities to function normally.

As we live uneventful lives, our dreams are filled by others, created to manipulate our minds into believing that anything is possible. How silly of us to think that the impossible is possible where the possibilities are only within us.

In the end, it’s easier to see the world through the lenses of a camera instead of our own actions.
Toronto will be the center of all that was described above. Thousands of people viewing hundreds of films which will not contribute to our intellectual development but will provide a temporary refuge from the nastiness this world has to offer.

So, laugh, cry, get angry and dance watching your life passing by because you are not creating your own film. Go and ogle at the stars with perfect bodies and attires and pretend that your body resembles theirs and don’t forget the autograph.

As the curtain comes down, the hopes are that some became enlightened to live a better life because they watched a film. I will stay home and watch an old Elvis movie and pretend I still have my afro.
