Bem-vindo, Sr. Presidente
O Canadá dá as boas-vindas ao Presidente de Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, de 13 a 17 de setembro. A visita, que deveria ter sido efetuada no ano passado para celebrar os 70 anos da assinatura de um protocolo de imigração, foi adiada para este ano. Em vez disso, ajudará a comunidade a celebrar os 70 anos da chegada dos primeiros imigrantes portugueses ao Canadá, o primeiro dos quais chegou a 13 de maio de 1953.
Embora tenham sido realizadas várias celebrações ao longo do ano, nomeadamente em maio e junho, esta visita será o culminar das comemorações com a inauguração de uma exposição comissariada pelo Professor Gilberto Fernandes, que será inaugurada a 11 de setembro e estará patente até 22 de setembro de 2023 no Metro Hall em Toronto. O título “Movimento Perpétuo”, a Diáspora Portuguesa no Canadá, narra alguns elementos da vida dos luso-canadianos desde 1953, através de apresentações visuais e vídeo. O Presidente da República Portuguesa, juntamente com outros dignatários portugueses e canadianos, estiveram presentes na inauguração oficial a 15 de setembro de 2023.
O Presidente visitará, principalmente, Montreal e Toronto, que representam os centros urbanos mais povoados por luso-canadianos.
As visitas de políticos portugueses ao mais alto nível são uma oportunidade para dar a conhecer a nossa vida fora de Portugal, que recebe pouco apoio da pátria.
Os portugueses imigram e prosperam em terras estranhas, adotando um incentivo de sobrevivência em ambientes não tradicionais. Portugal e os seus senhores políticos nunca compreenderam o que move um imigrante e a sua adoção de um país diferente, mas questionarão a nossa sinceridade se houver falta de apoio a Portugal. Talvez se fosse feito um esforço honesto para tratar os imigrantes como qualquer outro português, então Portugal colheria os benefícios do nosso trabalho árduo e o respeito da apreciação recebida.
Se nada mais de significativo for conseguido com a visita do Presidente da República, pelo menos a atenção será posta em evidência ao focar a vida dos portugueses que vivem fora de Portugal. Embora isto possa não parecer importante, de facto é.
Os imigrantes são investidores substanciais na economia de Portugal, pelo que esta importância económica futura será fundamental para melhorar a qualidade de vida do país, atualmente classificado como o 25º melhor do mundo. Isso não é suficiente. Os portugueses que vivem em Portugal não demonstram orgulho suficiente na sua nação. O país parece ter estagnado por inércia política e os seus cidadãos aceitaram que serão os estrangeiros a fazer avançar o país.
Por isso, Senhor Presidente, leve para casa a mensagem de que os portugueses no Canadá e noutros países têm orgulho nas suas raízes e na sua cultura, e constroem a sua visão com base no seu orgulho. Obrigado por nos ter visitado e espero que consiga perceber o que é um imigrante orgulhoso.

Welcome Mr. President
Canada welcoming the President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa from the 13th to the 17th of September. The visit which was to have happened last year to celebrate 70 years of signing an immigration protocol was delayed to this year.
He will instead help the community celebrate 70 years of the arrival of the first Portuguese immigrants to Canada, the first of which arrived on May 13th, 1953. While various celebrations have been completed throughout the year, particularly in May and June, this visit will be the culmination of the celebrations with the opening of an exhibit curated by Professor Gilberto Fernandes which will open on September 11th and run to September 22nd, 2023 at Metro Hall in Toronto. The title of “Movimento Perpetuo”, the Portuguese diaspora in Canada, chronicles certain elements of life of Lusa-Canadians since 1953, through visual and video presentations.
The President of Portugal along with other Portuguese and Canadian dignitaries were at the official unveiling on September 15th, 2023.
The President will visit Montreal and Toronto primarily, which represent the urban centers most populated by Lusa-Canadians.
Visits of Portuguese politicians at the highest level are an opportunity to showcase our lives outside of Portugal which receives little support from the motherland. Portuguese immigrate and thrive in strange lands, adopting an incentive of survival within non-traditional environments.
Portugal and its political masters have never understood what drives an immigrant and his adoption of a different country but will question our sincerity if there is a lack of support being given to Portugal. Perhaps if an honest effort to treat immigrants like any other Portuguese was made, then Portugal would reap the benefits of our hard work and respect from the appreciation received. If nothing else of significance is achieved by the President’s visit, at least attention will be highlighted by focusing on the lives of Portuguese living outside of Portugal.
While this may not appear important, in fact it is. Immigrants are substantial investors in the economy of Portugal, therefore this future economic significance will be pivotal in enhancing the quality of life of the country which is currently rated 25th best in the world. That’s just not good enough. Portuguese living in Portugal just don’t show enough pride in their nation. The country appears to have stagnated by political inertia and its citizens have accepted that it will be foreigners who will move the country forward.
So, Mr. President, take home the message that Portuguese in Canada and other countries are proud of their roots and their culture, and they build their vision based on their pride. Thank you for visiting us and I hope you get to understand what a proud immigrant is about.
