Jacob Alves, nascido e criado no Canadá com ascendência portuguesa, acendeu a sua paixão pelo futebol aos três anos. A sua jornada começou em Vaughan, onde passou a maior parte da juventude desenvolvendo não apenas o seu talento, mas também o seu amor pelo desporto. Aos 13 anos, a habilidade de Jacob – com ou sem bola – chamou a atenção de muitos olheiros, o que sem surpresa lhe valeu uma mudança para Perugia, Itália, onde ele procurou ficar ainda mais perto de realizar seu sonho de infância de se tornar um jogador profissional de futebol.
Três anos depois, Jacob regressou ao seu país (Canadá) e ingressou na Academia do Gil Vicente FC em Toronto. Pouco depois, Jacob, juntamente com um punhado de outros talentos selecionados dos jogadores do Gil Vicente FC em Toronto, embarcou numa viagem para Portugal, onde todos teriam a oportunidade de demonstrar a sua capacidade aos treinadores e staff das equipas do Gil Vicente FC Portugal.
Não precisaram de pensar duas vezes sobre ele, assinaram de imediato, valendo a Jacob o seu primeiro contrato profissional de sempre, a par de um lugar no plantel de Sub-18 do Gil Vicente para a época 2020/2021.
Jacob descreveu a sua transferência para Portugal para jogar profissionalmente pela equipa de Barcelos como o seu momento mais memorável como jogador de futebol.
Referiu especificamente como “não encontrou em Itália o que encontrou em Portugal com o Gil Vicente”. E partilhou o quanto se sentiu bem-vindo e bem tratado no clube, e como lhe prestaram constante cuidado e ajuda para garantir sua adaptação ao novo ambiente, deixando-o não só feliz, mas também com o sentimento de bem-sucedido.
Jacob elogiou a equipa e os jogadores, dizendo como, “eles são todos pessoas espetaculares. Profissionais e, no geral, uma grande família unida”. Jacob também não se esqueceu de referir as raízes do seu sucesso e elogiá-los, dizendo: “Sou muito grato por
tudo aquilo em que os treinadores e staff do Gil Vicente FC Toronto me ajudaram, e o meu sucesso também se deve muito a eles. Eles realmente incentivaram-me a ter sucesso e sempre me apoiaram. Posso dizer com segurança que ingressar na Academia do Gil Vicente FC em Toronto foi a melhor decisão que já tomei!”.
Jacob pretende aprender e crescer com esta oportunidade e dedica-se a trabalhar as longas e árduas horas necessárias para continuar a evoluir com a fantástica equipa da qual agora faz parte. “Sei que tenho que treinar forte todos os dias se quiser ser profissional. Ser um profissional não depende apenas de habilidade, mas também de mentalidade, forma física, saúde e compromisso com tornar-me o melhor jogador que puder ser”. A velocidade, capacidade técnica, paixão e empenho de Jacob certamente o transformarão num defesa-direito de sucesso da equipa Sub-18 do Gil Vicente e, quem sabe, da primeira equipa num futuro próximo.
Jacob Alves, born and raised in Canada with a Portuguese background, ignite his passion for soccer at the age of 3 years old. His journey began in Vaughan, where he spent most his youth developing not only his talent, but his love for the sport as well. At the age of 13, Jacob’s skill – both on and off the ball – caught the eyes of many scouts, which unsurprisingly earned him a move to Perugia, Italy, where he looked to get even closer to achieving his childhood dream of becoming a professional soccer player.
Three years later, Jacob moved back to his home country (Canada) and joined the Gil Vicente FC Academy in Toronto. Shortly after, Jacob, along with a handful of other selected talent from Gil Vicente FC players in Toronto, embarked on a journey to Portugal, where they would all have the chance to demonstrate their ability to the coaches and staff of Gil Vicente FC Portugal teams. They did not need to think twice about him, and immediately signed up, earning Jacob his first ever professional contract, along with a spot on Gil Vicente’s Under-18 roster for 2020/2021 season.
Jacob described his most memorable moment as a soccer player to be his move to Portugal to play professionally for the Barcelos team.
He specifically mentioned how he “didn’t find in Italy what he found in Portugal with Gil Vicente”. He went on to share how welcomed and cared for he felt at the club, and how they provided him constant care and help to ensure his adaptation to the new environment made him not only happy, but successful as well.
Jacob praised the staff and players, saying how, “they are all spectacular people. and professionals, and overall, one great, united family”.
Jacob also did not forget to think back to the roots of his success and praise them, saying “! am so thankful for everything that the Gil Vicente FC Toronto coaches and staff have helped me with, and my success is also greatly due to them.
They really pushed me to be successful and were very supportive at all times.
1 can confidently say that joining the Gil Vicente FC Academy in Toronto was the best decision I have ever made!” Jacob aims to learn and grow from this opportunity and is dedicated to working the long and hard hours necessary to continue evolving his skill and abilities with the fantastic team he is now a part of. “I know that I have to train hard every day if I want to be a professional.
Being a professional does not solely depend on your skill, but also your mentality, fitness, health, and commitment to become the best player you can possibly be”. Jacob’s speed, technical ability, passion, and commitment will surely see him be a successful right-back for Gil Vicente’s Under-18 team, and hopefully the first team in the near future.
