The 2025 NBA rookie group is asserting itself with vigor and ahead of schedule. It seems evident, even with a significant portion of the season yet to unfold, that this cohort will be recognized as one of the most formidable in the last ten years. The draft lottery has swiftly made an impact throughout the league. Cooper Flagg appears to be a foundational player for his team, showcasing a performance level rarely seen in teenagers. Kon Knueppel is confidently sinking three-point shots in Charlotte like a seasoned player. Dylan Harper has accelerated San Antonio’s progress, VJ Edgecombe is flourishing in Philadelphia, and New Orleans seems to have unearthed talent in Derik Queen and Jeremiah Fears. Players who provide valuable contributions are arising beyond just the top selections.

Somewhat overlooked amidst the national attention is Collin Murray-Boyles of Toronto, picked ninth overall, who continues to demand notice. In a game against Atlanta on Monday night, Murray-Boyles displayed one of the most comprehensive performances by a Raptors rookie in years. In only his sixth start, he tallied 17 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, three steals, and two blocks, with no turnovers and just two missed shots. This type of performance typically belongs to established stars, not rookies still acclimating to the league.

Yet, his impact goes beyond the statistics. Murray-Boyles influenced the game with his effort, timing, and basketball IQ. When Atlanta began to narrow Toronto’s lead midway through the fourth quarter, he made a crucial defensive play that led to a scoring opportunity for his team. He then secured a loose ball in traffic and swiftly set up a three-pointer for his teammate, Brandon Ingram. His contributions were consistent throughout the game.

Murray-Boyles is establishing himself as a versatile player who defends multiple positions, rebounds effectively, and makes intelligent decisions on the court. Despite not receiving significant accolades yet, his teammates and coaches in Toronto recognize his potential. His physicality has been impactful from the start, his instincts are improving, and his confidence is developing steadily.

While Murray-Boyles may not be grabbing headlines in a highly competitive rookie class, his ability to influence games in subtle but consistent ways suggests he could be a long-term asset for the Raptors.
