With $123 million from the City and $23 million from MLSE, the project will enhance infrastructure, technology, and amenities, solidifying BMO Field as one of North America’s top sports venues. Beyond the tournament, these improvements will boost Toronto’s economy, culture, and community.

Key Upgrades for FIFA World Cup 26

To meet FIFA’s requirements and accommodate increased demand, BMO Field will undergo significant upgrades:

  • Expanded Capacity: Seating will increase to 45,000 with 10,000 temporary seats in the north grandstand and 7,000 in the south.
  • Enhanced Player Facilities: Upgraded locker rooms will cater to international teams.
  • Broadcast Improvements: Infrastructure will be enhanced to meet global broadcasting standards.

Stadium Enhancements Beyond FIFA World Cup 26

In addition to tournament preparations, the upgrades will enhance the overall fan experience:

  • New LED Videoboards: Four large screens will improve visibility and engagement.
  • Advanced Lighting & Audio: LED sports lighting and an upgraded audio system will create an immersive matchday atmosphere.
  • Self-Serve Technology: AI-powered checkouts at concession stands will reduce wait times.
  • Wi-Fi Upgrades: Improved connectivity will accommodate increased traffic.
  • Enhanced Food Services: A state-of-the-art kitchen on the west side and more concession stands will improve service efficiency.
  • Upgraded Playing Field: The field will meet international standards, with new team dugouts for global competitions.

  • Rooftop Patio: A 1,000-person ticketed patio will be added post-tournament, offering a unique entertainment space.

Phased Construction Plan

The upgrades will be completed in two phases:

  • Phase 1: Began in December 2024 and will continue through August 2025.
  • Phase 2: Runs from December 2025 to March 2026, ensuring all work is finished before the FIFA World Cup 26.

BMO Field will remain fully operational during renovations, with temporary adjustments like directing fans to the southern gates and installing a temporary videoboard on the north side.

A December 2024 Deloitte Canada study estimates the FIFA World Cup 26 will generate up to $940 million in economic output for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), including:

  • $520 million in GDP growth
