BASKETBALL: Raptors trade is finally made official – Kawhi returns

The prodigal son has officially returned to Canada. Following a months-long delay fraught with controversy and an unprecedented league investigation, the NBA formally approved a blockbuster trade on Monday that sends two-time Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard back to the Toronto Raptors—the very franchise he famously led to a championship in 2019.

In exchange for the 35-year-old superstar, the Los Angeles Clippers are receiving a massive haul of players and future draft capital. To complete the trade, the Raptors had to give up All-Star forward Brandon Ingram, third-year guard Gradey Dick, unprotected first-round draft picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2027 first-round pick swap, and a pair of future second-round selections.

However, the magnitude of the trade was overshadowed by the massive scandal that temporarily put the trade on hold. For months, the NBA diligently investigated both Leonard and the Clippers organization for cap circumvention. The scrutinized issue centered on Leonard’s 2021 max contract and surprising allegations from September 2025 regarding a $28 million endorsement deal which Leonard was never to show up at in the first place. The fraudulent deal was tied to Aspiration, an environmental firm that declared bankruptcy in early 2025 following the arrest of its co-founder, Joe Sanberg, on fraud charges no less. According to the investigation, the lucrative deal required absolutely no actual work from Leonard and functioned only as illicit compensation for him remaining in Los Angeles.

When the league’s investigation concluded on September 2, the hammer fell on the Clippers franchise with historic severity. The NBA stripped Los Angeles of five consecutive first-round draft picks from 2029 through 2033 and slapped the team with a staggering $30 million fine for their pattern of misconduct. Furthermore, the team’s upper management faced harsh suspensions: owner Steve Ballmer and president of business operations Gillian Zucker were banned for a full year, while president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank received a six-month suspension. For his part, Leonard avoided suspension and had his contract upheld, receiving only a $700,000 fine.

While the NBA’s legal team sifted through the intricate trail of fraud, the players involved were awkwardly left in a state of limbo. Though the trade wasn’t officially confirmed, the athletes integrated themselves into their new cities as much as league rules allowed them to. In a highly publicized appearance, Leonard sat front-row at the OVO Athletic Centre on July 7 for Kyle Lowry’s retirement announcement, signaling his imminent return to the Raptors family. Similarly, Ingram was spotted observing his new Clippers teammates at a Las Vegas Summer League game on July 10.

With the legal and administrative dust finally settling, the basketball world can now pivot to the on-court ramifications. Raptors GM Bobby Webster expressed great enthusiasm about Kawhi’s return, noting that Leonard’s undeniable “competitiveness and championship mindset” are exactly what the franchise needs to return to glory.

Despite his age and past injury history, Leonard still remains a top-tier player. During the 2025-26 season, he posted averages of 27.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game. The seven-time All-NBA selection will immediately bolster a Toronto squad that already boasted the league’s fifth-best defensive rating last year.

Meanwhile, Los Angeles hopes for a fresh start with their newly acquired pieces. Ingram, who averaged 21.5 points for Toronto last season, is currently recovering from a right heel surgery following a first-round playoff injury against Cleveland. Dick will also be looking for a change of scenery to revitalize his young career after a regression in his third season saw his playing time dip to just 14 minutes a night.

Leonard is scheduled to officially address the media in his new—yet deeply familiar—threads on September 28.
