BASKETBALL: Raptors running out of time

Créditos: CBC

Heading into Game 5, a radical question lingered: Are the Toronto Raptors actually better than the Cleveland Cavaliers? Before the series, the idea was laughable; oddsmakers gave Cleveland a 90% chance to advance. Yet, through four games, Toronto’s regular-season dominance over the Cavs looked less like a fluke and more like a blueprint.

The narrative shifted as Scottie Barnes emerged as the best player on the floor, supported by a relentless RJ Barrett. Even Cleveland’s $269 million man, Evan Mobley, struggled to match the impact of Toronto’s rising core. But to validate their superiority, the Raptors had to win a best-of-three sprint. Instead, a 125-120 loss in Game 5 has pushed them to the brink of elimination, trailing 3-2.

The defeat was compounded by a growing injury list. Brandon Ingram, already struggling, exited early with heel inflammation, leaving the offense “stuck in the mud” during the fourth quarter. More concerning is Barnes’ status; after a collision with Thomas Bryant, a visible limp limited the star to just three points in the second half. With Immanuel Quickley already sidelined, Toronto’s depth is being tested to its absolute limit.

The first half was a masterclass in Raptors basketball. They punched early, leading by 12 behind Jakob Poeltl’s interior presence and Ja’Kobe Walter’s perimeter shooting. Even as stars like James Harden and Donovan Mitchell fought back, Toronto held an eight-point lead at the break.

However, the momentum died in the third quarter. Without a healthy Barnes to dictate the pace, the offense stagnated into contested, late-clock heaves. Cleveland took advantage, with Dennis Schröder and Mobley providing the late-game heroics. Now, the Raptors return to Scotiabank Arena for Game 6. Their belief remains intact, but their health is failing. To force a Game 7, they must find a way to win with their backs against the wall and a roster held together by tape and grit.
