BASKETBALL: Lowry retiring a Raptor is only right

For many fanbases, the “Greatest of All Time” debate is a source of constant friction. In Toronto, however, the conversation usually begins and ends with one name: Kyle Lowry. While other stars may have possessed higher vertical leaps or flashier scoring titles, Lowry was the undisputed heartbeat of the Raptors for nine seasons—a tenure defined by floor burns, charges taken, and, ultimately, a 2019 championship ring.

Though he currently suits up for his hometown Philadelphia 76ers, Lowry’s connection to the North remains unbreakable. Even after his 2021 departure to Miami, he was vocal about his final destination, famously telling Marc Spears that retiring as a Raptor was “his everything.” He hasn’t wavered since; during a 2023 return to Scotiabank Arena, he flatly stated, “I’m definitely retiring a Raptor.”

The only remaining question isn’t if his jersey will be retired, but how many boxes of tissues the fans will need when it happens. Following the franchise’s inaugural jersey retirement for Vince Carter in late 2024, Lowry’s No. 7 is the consensus choice for the next banner to hit the rafters. It is a gesture that acknowledges more than just his six All-Star appearances; it honors the grit that transformed a franchise.

When asked about the looming ceremony this past Sunday, the 39-year-old veteran initially deflected with his trademark humor, joking that he wasn’t sure the jersey would actually go up. But the bravado quickly gave way to the raw emotion that defined his playing style.

“Y’all ever seen me cry?” Lowry asked, reflecting on the prospect of seeing his number immortalized. “I put a lot of blood, sweat, and tears into that No. 7… it would be a super emotional day.”

At this stage of his career, Lowry’s impact is no longer found in the box score. In Philadelphia, his minutes are sparse, and his scoring is a fraction of what it once was. Yet, his value remains rooted in the same “heartbeat” leadership that anchored Toronto for nearly a decade. Whether he is mentoring younger guards or barking instructions from the bench, the qualities that made him a legend in Canada remain intact. He may be wearing a different uniform for now, but in the minds of the fans and the plans of the organization, Kyle Lowry has already come home.
