BASKETBALL: Is Raps Barnes headed for mega-stardom?

Créditos: CBC

Is Scottie Barnes a star, an all-star, or something even bigger? Five seasons into his career, the full range of possibilities remains remarkably open. At minimum, he’s already shown he can be the best player on a winning team — that much feels firmly established.

Toronto’s early-season surge has only intensified the conversation. The Raptors have become one of the NBA’s surprise stories, winning five straight and nine of their last 10 while navigating the league’s toughest road schedule. A team that spent June in the draft lottery is suddenly sitting second in the Eastern Conference and on the cusp of securing its first-ever NBA Cup quarterfinal appearance with a win over the struggling Washington Wizards on Friday.

Yes, the additions of Brandon Ingram and a healthy Immanuel Quickley have mattered, as have Jakob Poeltl’s consistency, RJ Barrett’s versatility, and improved bench depth. But Barnes remains the Raptors’ driving force. His production mirrors his 2023–24 all-star campaign, only with better efficiency, and he’s currently the league’s lone player averaging at least 19.2 points, 7.8 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 1.4 steals, and 1.7 blocks. If he holds that pace, he joins a historic group: Kevin Garnett, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Add his career-best shooting — including nearly 39 per cent from deep — and the numbers start resembling those of true superstars.

What works against him is that his game isn’t built on scoring alone. Barnes impacts winning most dramatically with his defence, versatility, and ability to influence every possession. His game-saving block against Charlotte and his dominance in Cleveland — 28 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists, five blocks — highlight how drastically he can shift momentum. Three of those blocks came against Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen, one of the toughest frontcourts in basketball.

Still, the question isn’t whether Barnes can reach that level; it’s whether he can stay there night after night. Even he admits that consistency is the next step. Superstardom in today’s NBA demands historic reliability — the kind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokic, and Luka Doncic demonstrate regularly. Barnes often compares himself to Giannis, admiring the relentless physicality and force that the Bucks superstar brings every game.

Carrying that load nightly is grueling, and Barnes still has fluctuations — strong all-around performances that stop short of dominance. But Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic remains convinced Barnes will keep ascending, praising his ability to learn, adapt, and return better after every challenge.

For Barnes, the formula is simple: “Stay consistent. Steady grind. Bring it every single night.” And if he does, the superstar conversation won’t just be speculation — it’ll be reality.                                          RS/MS
