BASEBALL: Jays Ponce done for the season with injury

Créditos: CBC

Blue Jays fans are reeling from the news that starter Cody Ponce will miss the remainder of the season following a catastrophic injury in his regular-season debut. The Jay’s medical team confirmed a torn right anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) requiring surgery. With an estimated recovery time of up to six months, Ponce’s highly anticipated return to the Majors has been cut short almost as immediately as it began.

A return interrupted

Ponce’s return to Toronto was a testament to international perseverance. After dominant campaigns in Japan’s NPB and South Korea’s KBO—most notably an all-star 2025 campaign with the Hanwha Eagles where he posted a 1.89 ERA and 252 strikeouts—he transformed that success into a lucrative three-year, $30 million contract with the Jays.

Expectations were sky-high after a near-flawless Spring Training, where he maintained a 0.66 ERA. However, the “curse” of the Blue Jays’ rotation seemed to strike on March 31st. While facing the Colorado Rockies, Ponce collapsed mid-delivery, exiting the game after failing to complete even three innings.

Global reaction

The news echoed across three countries, sparking deep sympathy from fans in Korea and Japan who had watched his rise. Japanese media outlet The Answer highlighted the “unlucky” nature of the injury, noting the bittersweet timing of the news breaking just as the Dodgers and Blue Jays were set to headline the week’s headlines.

Hope amongst despair

Despite the bad news, Ponce’s outlook remains positive and resilient. Going onto social media to address the Toronto fans, he expressed disappointment but also vowed to return to playing. “I didn’t expect it to start like this. But I love this team and my teammates so much. The best stories always begin with a twist.”

For a pitcher who reinvented himself overseas to earn a second chance in the majors, this injury is a cruel setback. However, if his career trajectory has proven anything, it is that Ponce excels at navigating the long road back. While the Blue Jays must now scramble to fill a massive hole in their rotation, the focus remains on Ponce’s recovery and the eventual “twist” in his comeback story.
