The federal government has reached an agreement with Moderna that would see doses of its COVID-19 vaccine shipped to Canada within 48 hours of Health Canada approval, CBC News has learned.

Health Canada approves Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is scheduled to make the formal announcement at a news conference in Ottawa at 11:30 a.m. ET.

The shipments are contingent on final regulatory approval from Health Canada, which is still waiting on some final data from Moderna before it can make a decision. But this agreement opens the door for the Moderna vaccine to be used in Canada before the end of December.

Canada has an agreement to get about two million doses from Moderna by the end of March. The Moderna vaccine is easier to store and ship than the Pfizer vaccine, which means it can be used in the territories as well as remote First Nation and Indigenous communities.
