The Ontario government, led by Doug Ford, will allow alcohol consumption in almost all areas of provincial parks starting this summer.
Until now, consumption was limited to campsites, but it will now be allowed in areas such as beaches and picnic areas. Visitors will be able to bring alcoholic beverages or purchase them in some parks.
Environment Minister Todd McCarthy says the measure aims to improve the visitor experience and boost tourism, while ensuring safety.
Despite the easing of restrictions, rules against illegal behavior, such as underage drinking or public intoxication, remain in effect. Some areas, such as playgrounds and sports areas, will continue to prohibit alcohol.
The decision is part of a broader government strategy to modernize the rules on alcohol consumption in the province.
